If your TV has a QAM tuner, you can get whatever digital TV your cable company provides without encryption. This generally includes the local over the air HDTV. If you want the encrypted HDTV, like ESPN, you have to get the HD cablebox or HD DVR from your cable company.

An outboard box like the iScan or iScan Pro will up-convert, but wont look much better than what your TV is already doing. And these box's will require you to have a cable box to feed the up-converter.

If you want ESPN-HD - get another cable box.
