I'm watching the news at the moment and there's a portion of the program devoted to the Golden Compass. Now this in itself is not unusual.

The thing that is unusual is that this is happening in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Not is it just unusual, its rather shocking since Canadians don't generally behave so stupidly.

Apparently the book has been pulled from the libraries of Catholic schools in the city that didn't have a problem with displaying the books until the movies came out and a handful of Christians suddenly decided to freak out about it when the books had been part of the libraries since 1995 and they didn't complain before the movie came out.

What do you think of this?

I find it quite despicable. I also think its censorship and against Canadian law.

Is your faith so weak that it can't survive books written as entertainment?

This was people with excessive amounts of free time, a fanatical amount of faith, and a persecution complex tend to do: see attacks against their beliefs in the tiniest little things, and then scream to Heavens in outrage about it. It is ironic that, by doing so, they are infringing upon the same freedoms that allow them to make their opinions heard so loudly, but, whatever...it is the right of religious nutjobs to get all up in arms about arbitrary things. No. It is their duty. Because no one else in their right mind will bother to do the same...

The Catholic school is a privately run school.
As far as I know, they have a right to decide what they put on their bookshelves.
The whole purpose of a Catholic school is that they teach kids about god.
I don't think it would be in the best interest of the school if they carried books portraying god as imaginary.
If they were trying to ban the making of the book or movie, I could understand.
If you walk into a local school, you don't expect to find the holy bible.
That is like expecting the local atheist organization to display christian literature on their bookshelf.
Maybe I'm missing something in your question.
God Bless

Some groups will find a reason to protest anything. If a group of people don't like the book or movie the don't have to read it or see it. For the rest of us it just entertainment to see how they argue against it.
From the previews I seen it looks good and I just might go see it.

Perhaps now people responsible for school libraries and public libraries will take the time to actually "read" what they are putting on their shelves. Parents are very concerned about the nonsense going into their child's head and it is their right to teach their child what they feel is proper to morals, virtues and Christianity. Better they speak up as being morally responsible than to be so laid back, anything goes! That is what has been happening for the past 40 - 60 years and now we are in a big mess with our children, world and Church. This author has stated blatenly that he is out to destroy Christianity and teach children about atheism. WE WILL TEACH OUR CHILDREN, NOT HIM.....in smaller print, it is all about the money to be made.....at the expense of the children.....do you think other denominations would put up with this sort of thing? I don't.

The book was not written as entertainment. It was specifically written to encourage people to turn away from God. Do a search on Philip Pullman and you will see what he says on the subject. He makes no bones about it - he wants people to stop believing in God and that is why he writes what he does.

I find it interesting that they had no idea as to the content of a book in their own library.

I think you will find that the book brings poor light to the Catholics who are mentioned. It has nothing to do with Christianity.

By opposing any form of expression, the religious majority are admitting that they don't want any competition when it comes to monopolizing the education of children.
