One is priced lower than the other, and can you still play PS2 games on the new system?
Don't know much about them, and this is going to be a gift.
Please explain which one is better.

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

There are currently 2 models of PS3 on the market:

40GB

80GB

The most obvious difference is that the 80GB model has a larger hard drive. The hard drive is used to store game data for faster loading, your game saves, and can also be used to store music, videos and games downloaded from the PS3's online marketplace.

However, the 80GB PS3 has one other major difference: It can play (some) PS2 games. The 80GB PS3 uses an emulator that allows it to play PS2 games. It isn't as compatible as the older, discontinued models (20GB, 60GB) which contained the actual processors from the PS2, however most PS2 games should work.

The 40GB PS3 only has a 40GB hard drive, cannot play PS2 games AT ALL, and has fewer USB ports.

Which to buy:

If playing PS2 games is a concern at all, get the 80GB PS3.

If PS2 games don't matter at all, and you don't anticipate using the online service to download games, demos, or movies, get the 40GB PS3 and use the extra $100 for a 2nd controller or a game :-)

You can always buy a larger hard drive for the PS3 and upgrade it yourself. The directions are in the PS3's manual.

OK, their have been 4 models released, 20GB, 40GB, 60GB and 80GB. People refer to them like that because that's the size of the hard drive in each model.

20GB
This was the first cut down version of the PS3, it does not have any flash card ports, or wireless network facility. In most countries this model is being (or has been) phased out.
It can play DVD, Blue-Ray, CD, PS1 Games, PS2 Games and PS3 Games.
I would not recommend purchasing this model.

40GB
This model CANNOT play playstation2 games! It has 2 instead of 4 USB ports, not sure if it has the flash card ports.
It can play DVD, Blue-Ray, CD, PS1 Games and PS3 Games.
I would recommend purchasing this model ONLY if you already have a Playstation2 and are short on cash.

60GB
This model has all the features that the Playstation3 offers.
It can play DVD, Blue-Ray, CD, PS1 Games, PS2 Games and PS3 Games. In most countries this model is being (or has been) phased out.
I would recommend purchasing this model out of them all.

80GB
This model is the same as the 60GB model, except that it has a bigger Hard drive.
It can play DVD, Blue-Ray, CD, PS1 Games, PS2 Games and PS3 Games.
I wouldn't really recommend purchasing this system as i find it hard to justify the price increase from the 60GB model for a measly extra 20GB hard drive space.

With the 3 models that can play Playststion2 games, not all of the games are supported, i would estimate about 80% of the Playstation2 Library work. I have added a link to the sony support site where you can check the backwards compatibility of a Playstation2 game on the Playstation3.

Hope all that makes sense and helps :)

The better console is the 60GB because it can play all PS2 games, the 40GB PS3 can NOT play PS2 games.

Also, the 60GB PS3 isn't being made anymore (but you can get them online), so if you can't get a 60GB PS3 the next best is the 80GB PS3 because it plays most PS2 games.

the best one is the 60gb ps3, because you can have wireless internet, four usb ports, memory slots, play all ps1 and ps2 games, and other.

80gb ps3 is like the 60gb, except they will give you a free ps3 game called motorstorm and instead of hardware, they are using software, which mean that you cannot play all ps1 and ps2 games, but upscale the graphic of the game.
