Well it was socrates who said this during his trial which had begun because Socrates had tried to convince his students to think for themselfs thus Socrates was given the death penalty but he could've chosen exile, life in prison, but chose death because he wanted to show to society what life was really like and to let them think for themselfs thus he chose the death penalty.
