Being a female (maybe thats why??) I seem to encounter them a lot... (not to mention a ton of my in-laws!!) and if I care about the person I will take the time and explain all of my real reasons.... but what about those people that are just uninformed and ungrateful that just want to make a "smart" comment??? The ones that say "What are you, suicidal.. dont you know we're at war" or something to that affect....
I dont want to be rude, but its a little hard... The three responses Ive been using are:

Im going so you dont have to...

Im going so you have the freedom to say.. (whatever dumb coment they just said)

And ...So you can put a "support the troops" bumper stick on your car and pretend that you do!

But hey, its getting old...
Any other ways yall have of ending the discussion?

These are all highly situational:

Outnumbered, yes. Outmaneuvered, maybe. Outclassed, never!

The problem with the easy way out is that it's already been mined

"Retreat, Hell. I just got here." --GEN Chesty Puller, USMC

This is the perfect war; They want to die, and we want to kill them.

It's become a Terrorist Rehabilitation Program: We turn bad terrorists into good ones.

If you really think the military is full of mind-numbed killer robots, do really think it's a good idea to p*ss me off?

Never pet a burning dog.

Sounds great, but I think we're well past the "Good Idea Cut-Off Point."

I'm sure the media isn't really writing about us, but maybe we should jump on that wholesale desertion thing.

If you strive for only the minimum, you probably won't even get that.

Maybe you have a point--Why would the jihadists want to bomb us here? That'd end all the backstabing and confusion.

Okay, I only have a few seconds so here's a question that's guaranteed to have a short answer--describe to me exactly how it's possible that we loose?

Your key debating points are Soooo, 2003.

We know that you guys think that nothing is too good for us troops. Because that's always exactly what we get from you.

Because the 'L' in Congress stands for "Leadership."

When was the last time you did anything for your country/society?

That's an intresting point of view your basing it on first hand experience i'm sure (really sracastically).

You know you might have a valuable opinon if your head wasn't so far up your .......... (usually the line i would LOVE to hand to civilians who know excatcly what it's like to be the wife of a deployed soldier because their hubby is a firefighter ext) i'm too nice, i never do.

Isn't it nice that we live in a country where no matter how stupid you are, you have the right to prove it.

Sorry i've had a bad week, the first two weren't too awfully rude, the rest was because i've met every extreme case this week.

Allot has been of the "Greatest Generation" The generation that fought WWII. Going with that I sometimes say,
This is our generations fight, this is the problem of our times, and I'm going to do my part.

I also use,
Freedom is not free, it has a horrible cost in blood, I feel it is better to be mine than yours

The last of the common ones I use is (mind you I was in at this point)
On September 11 I saw my country under attack, I saw my people die. I saw my civilian planes fly into those towers and kill my people. If someone has a problem with my country and my people, come see me, it MY job to take the heat, thats what I'm here for, to take the blows. Seeing what happened but a resolve into me I will not let go of. I do not EVER want to see my people hurt again, so I'll fight until I know that won't happen again.

I don't have anything to say to the ungrateful people that are too stupid to realize that the only reason they are free to bash the military is because of the military. Maybe they would like living in a 3rd world country better.

alot of people are ignorant and dont understand the concept of honor or self sacrifice.
when joining the military was all about free college everyone in America signed up....now that we're at war its a "stupid decision" and teenagers are told everyday that soldiers are murderers etc....

if i were you i wouldn't justify anything they said with a response.
or maybe "im glad you have the freedom to say your opinion, isnt the united states a great place, god bless the military for protecting those rights"

I myself have so much respect for you and everyone that is in the military. Not everyone can do what yall do. If it was me I would tell bashers that, "punks hide be-hide words but real people stand up for what the believe in".
or
"people die all the time and at any moment, I can go to war and come back and you will be the died one" (big smile when saying it).

You can't argue with idiots. Be the better person. Just ignore them and walk away. (yes, I know it's hard but you accomplish nothing with any such argument except to raise your blood pressure.)

BTW I am former military and against the war but I would never insult a soldier, marine, etc.

I am a female in the coast guard, and believe me.....I've heard it all! Military bashers are ignorant and stupid. They are too idiotic to think about what kind of turmoil this country would in if we DIDN'T have our military. They criticize your decision to join simply because they don't have the balls to join themselves. Be proud!!!
