In training we will reward a good job with a treat in the mouth and then reaching down and pat the chest with both hands... eventually the treat goes away and they just get the good feeling of patting on the chest...
Perhaps you could just try the "special" patting of the chest for a reward... and only do this as the ":good dog" patting.
Keep the excitement in your voice when praising and that should also spark him into thinking he just did something great...
Keep Trying and I wish everyone cared as much about their beloved pets as you do hon..
If He doesn't eat any type of a treat... check out his mouth and teeth... or even a dislocated jaw.
Merry Christmas To You

Well, first, not all dogs are food motivated. Maybe your dog really, really loves chasing his ball. If that were the case, a better reward for him would be for you to throw the ball for him a few times. Some dogs work best for lots of praise. Or maybe you just need to feed him different treats. What are you giving him? Some dogs don't want the stuff that's full of chemicals and preservatives - try treating him with chicken or rabbit jerky (made for dogs, only ingredient is the meat), or bits of cheese, or some of the really good treats made by Wellness, Innova or Canidae.

Loving on him and telling him good boy is enough for most dogs. He will get the message. If you really want to give him a special treat, try small pieces of meat. I have never seen a dog refuse pieces of meat. Some dogs though are really shy about taking food from the hand of a person, and would prefer to have the treat on the ground or in a dish. You could try that too.

Bil-Jac Liver treats are excellent training treats if you have not tried them yet, give them a try....dogs seem to love them.
If not, maybe try a dab of peanut butter (creamy) on your finger and give it to your pooch instead of a treat. It will always leave them wanting more.
And, although cat food and treats are way to high in fat for dogs, the Wiskas Temptation treats are very small and could be used for a training treat. My dog is older and has lost her desire for dog treats so when we are doing tricks with her or training her (you can always teach an old dog new tricks!) we use the cat treats since we do tricks with the cat at the same time (sit, paw, clap....cat tricks are funny).

Either try a very meaty flavored treat or just use praise. I never give mine treats for going outside and pottying. I do give them alot of praise and a thumbs up. My baby is 3 and he still looks at me to get the thumbs up when he's pottys.

I have a dog that is very picky and doesn't like dog treats either. We are always shocked when he takes any dog treat. This is what we do for him. Try some squeeze cheese or natural balance dog food roll chopped up. You can get the dog food roll at PetCo,PetSmart has the same thing but under a different name.

praise is actually a great way to reward your dog. when he does something good act as if he just cured cancer...him doing good is the best thing in the world to you. lots of pats on the head and 'good boy!' should be enough to keep him doing the good stuff! not all dogs are food motivated so praise is a great way to go.
