Latest breaking news: it was an SKS 'assault rifle'.
More here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071206/ap_on_re_us/mall_shooting
Turns out he had been kicked out of his own home for behavior problems, so this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who knows him. He shaved his head and always wore camouflage. I really wonder who sold someone like that a rifle, much less an SKS.

The Omaha mall did not allow CC so everyone at the mall did not have a ccw pistol on them if at least one did the tragedy might have been avoided or at least minimized to the point where 1 or 2 people would have died instead of 8.
The weapon used was probably a modified SKS or a Mini-14
Its sad that it has to come to this point where random mass shootings happen more often it makes sense to be prepared with a ccw pistol this day and age and be alert at all times of what is going on around you.

I haven't heard yet. Although knowing the media terminology all guns are either assault rifles or sniper rifles. That's how they have been naming these things lately.
Plus, I agree with that guy on here, no matter what laws were out there, I don't think this was preventable. This shooter is your garden variety scumbag with mental issues. As that he killed himself, he was very well committed to what he was doing and the laws we currently have didn't/wouldn't stop him a bit. -Note I'm not calling for more laws, but less leniency for people committing violent crimes.
Atleast the families of the deceased will have closure. The jerk shot himself. The families won't have to suffer again with the shooter getting an insanity plea and doing a light sentence and getting paroled.
I only hope more dangerous criminals would have the courtesy to commit suicide, but without making any other victims.

Hey, I live here in Omaha. Recent reports from eyewitnesses said that it appeared to be a M-16 type of rifle (assault). The police have yet to say.

I agree with ya Jim. And I couldn’t have said it beter. Criminals do NOT care about the law. You can make all the laws you want and they don’t care, this is why we call them criminals people! So making laws that remove the right to bear arms just takes the citizens the means to protect themselves, and gives the nut jobs like this fellow to have free reign to slaughter anyone.
The news does not report how many thousands of people have stopped criminals with guns.
You can go to the NRA web site and read the true stories of how good Americans saved lives and stopped crime with a gun.
My prayers for the famlies.

Not to make light or make fun of this tragedy.
But did the gun laws stop him? Even if there was a total ban on guns; would the killer chose not to kill because of gun laws?
I mean killing people is against the law so any kind of gun law will also be ignored by a killer.
I can see the whacko now; “Let me see I want to do this but I don’t want to break a gun or weapon law!”
My prayers are with the familys. But NOT for the whacko.
Lets arm ourselves America and have some one there buy our shear numbers to stop people like this!
