Go to The Food Network website and click on Giada DeLaurentis' page. She usually has some fairly simple Italian desserts.

Tiramisu Toffee Dessert
"This is a nice version of the popular Italian pick-me-up dessert. The toffee candy in this recipe adds a delightful crunchiness to the smooth creamy whipped cream quality of an already perfect dessert."
INGREDIENTS
1 (10.75 ounce) package frozen prepared pound cake, thawed and cut into 9 slices
3/4 cup strong brewed coffee
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup chocolate syrup
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
2 cups heavy whipping cream
2 (1.4 ounce) bars chocolate covered English toffee, chopped
DIRECTIONS
Arrange cake slices on bottom of a rectangular 11x7 inch baking dish, cutting cake slices if necessary to fit the bottom of the dish. Drizzle coffee over cake.
Beat sugar, chocolate syrup, and cream cheese in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Add whipping cream; beat on medium speed until light and fluffy. Spread over cake. Sprinkle with chocolate-covered toffee candy.
Spread frosting over cake. Sprinkle with toffee candy. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, but no longer than 24 hours to set dessert and blend flavors.

Sliced strawberries, balsamic vinegar, simple syrup, pepper, creme fresh & crushed ameretti cookies.
Make simple syrup add just enough balsamic vinegar for a bit of a bite.
Fresh ground pepper on strawberries & toss - not a lot of pepper maybe 1/4 TBSP per cup.
Mix strawberries with vinegar syrup and refrigerate until cold.
Layer berries, creme fresh and amerettis in wine goblets to serve.
I know it sounds odd, but it is really good. And I know I pretty much suck with amounts but that is why I like to cook not bake. Baking is too disciplined for me. Trust me you will like it - if you like strawberries and aren't scared to go out on a limb. I am sure you can find a real recipe for it on line because I didn't make it up myself.

This is going to sound weird, but keep an open mind:
Strawberries and balsamic vinegar. I quarter them and shake them in a mixture of b.v. and a little sugar (just a little) and top it off with a tiny bit of shaved dark chocolate. I get a ton of compliments!

YOu know what's cute and original? a fruit pizza! make a crust out of shortbread, for "sauce" use either vanilla pudding or custard, and on top, put all kinds of fruits, either frozen or fresh. There's not much cooking involved, because all you're cooking is the crust.
