They are probably cracks from dryness. Get him some doggie booties at the pet store, and some lotion for the pads of his feet. (You have to get this at the pet store, or you can get the lotion at a tack supply store.)

I've noticed that alot of people had said dryness as a cause, and that very well could be. I would like to offer another possibility, I noticed that my dog started having what looked like cuts or sores on his back legs..it took forever to figure out what it was from. Many dogs will chew their back legs and cause lacerations because of allergies. Often if it is a food allergy itchy legs is one of the signs, I would talk to a vet just to be sure. If it's not allergies, they can give you an idea of what to do. Also, there is a product called hot spots that will help this temporarily, but it's no substitute for a vet's advice.
Good luck

They were probably caused by dry skin. Go to a pet store or your vet and get some ointment or cream. That should help. Also, are there any other animals in the house? They might have been the cause. Sometimes the animals will scratch or bite when they are playing or just when they want to be left alone.

The cat maybe getting into fights with other cats or it may like to bat at something you have and may get cuts from that. Keep your cat indoors if you can and monitor him to see what he does to get these cuts. There is no real cure for this. Maybe you coul have your vet put on a kitty cam to see what it does if you can afford it. Maybe put on some lotion to the paws if they get dried out. You can put bandages on to help heal and protect the areas.

It pro baly is not cuts, the dog has extreme dry pads, you need to call the vet and get some recommendation of what to put on them....I use Johnsons baby oil on my dogs feet in the winter if needed, and our vet said it will not hurt them to lick it...
it will mostien the pads and make them soften up.....'

It's likely a vitamin deficiency, which is causing his pads to dry out. Try Vaseline for a start. If he licks it off it won't hurt him. If he were mine, I'd get the vet to check him out. It's awful when a pet is suffering.

Go to the vet, just because they can get (or may already be) infected. The vet can tell you what to do or stop doing, and can give you some cream to make sure it wont get infected.

They have to come from somewhere you need to watch close to see where he is getting them then you can fix the problem.
