Just out of curiousity (I have been serving for 5 years, so I have my own opinion), what do people think the "average" tipping amount should be?

As a server in Michigan, our tax is only 6%, so for here, that would be a 12% tip, which isn't much. Thank you for answering my question. Just an FYI to be informed, in Michigan, standard is 18-20% for average, and servers here only make $2.65/hr. Though it may vary depending on your state. Thanks for input.

until recently, standard tipping was 15%. however, since the cost of living has gone up so drastically, standard is 18-20%. here in texas, servers only get $2.13/hr, which obviously doesn't cover cost of living, especially with part time hours. i agree with the above answer....if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out. hope that answers your question.

I have been a server, cocktail server, and bartender. Tipping is different in bars than restaurants (bar shifts are typically longer, more difficult/more customers to try to serve efficiently, and more high-stress). If you only tip 10-20% in a bar, your server may have visited you a lot, but gets a shitty tip. I can't tell you how many times I've had customers with a $30 bill tip me only $3 when I've brought them at least six drinks, kept their table/ashtrays clean, given them attention/advice, etc. That is simply not enough. Standard is a dollar per drink, more if you really enjoy them. If your server/bartender hooks you up (gives you something for free), the tip is expected to go up, as well. If it is happy hour, and drinks are cheaper, it does not mean you get to tip less. Additionally, if you are ordering really complicated and/or frozen drinks, you should tip more as you are taking up more of their time than the other customers. Finally, if you wind up getting drunk and completely hitting on your server/bartender--you had better tip realllly well because they were probably still nice to you even though they wanted to tell you to get lost. =) Cheers!

I was a server for 6 years. It all depends on the service. Exceptional service should at least get 20%. Tipping etiquette is 15% of the bill. For cheaper meals, the tip should be higher. Just because your meal only cost 10.00, it does not take less work to take care of the table then a meal that is 50, but most people(if they are tipping 20%) will tip 2.00 for the 10.00 meal and 10.00 for the 50 meal.

I used to be a server and I tip on average 20%. 15% seems to be the norm in Canada.

Average should be 15%, more for good service and less for bad service.
