ok i learned about a week ago that not going to mass on sunday is commiting a mortal sin (if you have full knowledge)? well i am wondering if this is acceptable for not being one (the mass i was planning on going to starts at 12):
i woke up at about 10-ish and my mom was leaving for work. so my mom taking me was out of the question. so i called my grandma and was going to go with her but she ended up going to an earlier mass i didnt know she was going to. i cant drive and dont have a car, plus i was in the house all day. is this considered a mortal sin?

ps i am catholic too.

Being unable to transport yourself to Mass but desiring to go means that you didn't commit a mortal sin.

You only have to ask yourself how hard you tried. Catholic parishes usually are not too far from home. Could you have walked? Biked? Taken a bus?

And since you don't want the same thing to happen next week, you need to plan ahead a bit. Talk to Mom & Grandma on Saturday instead of Sunday morning to figure out how you can get to Mass.

Hi,

I discussed this with many priests over my 50 + years and here is the conclusion:

1) You do not have to go if you are obliged to work that day, especially when you are the bread winner and must feed your family.

2) If you were planning to go and some visitors or family show up from out of the blue, it is not sinful to stay and look after them.

3) You always have had a dispensation whilst travel ling.

4) If you are not well you are excused but my rule if you are to ill to make mass be sure you are ill enough not to make the theater or bar that evening.

Finally it does become sinful when missing mass turns into a "habit" where you just become too lazy to make an effort to go. In your case above I see nothing to worry about.

Dear Text me;

I'm not sure anyone on this forum can assure you, "yes, this is a sin," or "no, this is not a sin." This is a matter between you and God, but it should be sorted out. Would you be able to talk to your Mom or to a priest who knows you and your situation?

I don't know how old you are, but my only thought would be, another time, would it help for you and your Mom to have a talk on Saturday morning, and come up with a plan for both of you to meet your Sunday obligation to attend Holy Mass?

Good luck to you, dear.

I don't know if anyone has the real answer on that one. It is a sin ( Keep the Sabbath Day holy), but are their lupe holes? I guess I have been lucky since I have parents that take me to mass every week. But if you really want to go, and for the right reasons, you can find a way. Ask God for guidance and help and he will answer you. You may not like the answer, but you may not be asking the right question. Where there is a will there is a way.

you have not commited mortal sin. but those responsible for making sure you have a way to go are guilty. Plan ahead for the rest of the sundays, make permanent arangements.

yes it is a mortal sin, but our priest said, illness, weather, or no way of getting there------- then just to your mass prayers, or rosary, but the next time you are able to go to mass, go to confession and mention that you were unable to get there, but did your mass prayers.
