Personally I would leave it out but I would feed it so it doesn't starve to death. Especially if it's a kitten.
Then try posting fliers or run an ad in your local newspaper seeking a home for him/her. Lots of people love cats and you would probably find it a home pretty quickly.

I would at least put out a box with blankets in it so the cat will have shelter from the elements. I don't know where you are, but it is cold and snowy here and I'm sure the cat would appreciate you letting him camp out on your porch. Obviously he liked you guys because he is still hanging around. I would put out the box and feed him for a little while, until a spot at the shelter opens. Also, ask around at work and call the local vets. Some will take in animals that need to be rehomed or know someone who will. An elderly family member or neighbor might appreciate a cat's company as well.

This is where you can help the S.P.C.A, & give the kitty a Christmas present & let the SPCA spay her & give her the set of shots; Then go to Walmart & buy a big bag of cat food, & a little of the canned stuff, & give her a little of the canned food maybe every other day. The Cat won't be any problem at all, & will get the mice/rats/small snakes; just watch to make sure she doesn't bring you her LIVE Reward; such as mine has done, with the little garden snakes. I had thought about giving mine to the SPCA to adopt out, too, but they DO have way too many on their hands already. My kitties stays in or goes out; they like it both ways. If you turn the kitty away, she will maybe starve too death or get sick & die, from all the Neglect. .

If you have a garage put a big box up somewhere high and stick a few blankets inside of it and put some cat-like scenery around the inside of the box. My cousin has a stray cat and it became pregnant and when the mother had kittens my cousin did that and cut a hole in the box and nailed another box next to it for her kittens and built a ladder so the kittens to get on top of the box so the kittens could stay under a lamp when they were cold and when they were hungry .she would go to a store around the block to buy milk and cat food . If you give stray kittens dry food then you have to put a small bit of milk in the food dish to make it softer so the kittens could easily digest the food easier. If your cat has kittens than be sure to dedicate alot of your time to to your kittens and make sure they don't have any gunk in there eyes because in the morning the eyes might be all filled with gunk and when that happens get a sort of wet wash clothe and wipe it out carefully.

You now are the proud owners of a cat....like it or not. About a year or so ago, I went to the Cat centre and brought home a beautiful cat, but since we have moved, she decided that when she gets out of the house she climbs up on the roof and will not come down. I am elderly and this means I must climb a ladder up two stories to get this cat and bring her down. I am terrified that I am going to fall and hurt myself...but I know if I ask on Yahoo if I should take her back to the cat centre they will all call me a bad pet owner....but honestly I can't afford hospital bills if I fall and get hurt. So I guess we are both in the same boat, we have cats that have created problems for us, and we must keep them. Don't get me wrong I love my cat, but I feel she is endangering me.

You need to see if you can give it to a friend or family member. It is cruel to put it on the streets but you did the right thing by not putting it out on the streets. Put up posters of a found cat with your phone number. If i was nice enough to let you touch it I'm sure it belongs to someone.

There's a few things you can do.
1. if you are going to release her back into the unknown, (which I wouldn't recommend) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take her to a spay/neuter clinic and get her altered. (generally under 25$ for females, as low as 25 cents for males, contact your local humane society) This would require you to care for it for up to 3 days
2. List in pennysaver, craigslist, local papers, anything else FREE CAT TO GOOD HOME.
3. Hang on to her till you can get her into a no-kill shelter, it'll be a while, the shelters fill up during the holidays with all kinds of unwanted christmas pets
4. look up cat rescues in your phone book, generally run out of peoples homes, less advertised, but usually willing to take in strays. (esp. cats)
5. Talk to the employees at your local grooming shops/pet stores/vet's see if any of them are looking for a new pet.
And many other options, all would require you to hang on to him/her for a little while.
Of course, there's always this one..
6. open your home to an animal in need.
