I am looking for a reliable used car to purchase for my mom 1990 or newer good mpg and $5k or less, the newer the better. She will not drive a truck. What model & mileage should i look for. The car has to have air conditioning and automatic, nothing else is necessary. She can't have anything that needs constant maintenance, she cannot afford it. Thanks for any help

Look in www.autotrader.com, if I were you I would buy an Escort or something like that, or a Cavalier or Corolla ( Civics are good but it is difficult to find one which has not been raced), look for cars in your area.

Of course you will need the car to be checked by a professional or a friend or relative who knows about cars.

I drive an Escort, economical a good on the road.

check ebay and click search by distance to find cars being sold close to you. 5k reliable? you can get something pretty nice for that on ebay... american cars are a bis less reliable compared to the japs but they have cheaper parts, and remember that most cars IF WELL maintained will last you quite a bit... simple things like changing your oil count a lot!

The honda has been the best value for resale and maintenance. You can buy a fairly low miled honda civic in your price range and have a little over for some future maintenance needed to keep in running for some time..

Hi! Thanks for an awesome question. I would buy any Toyota product owned by an adult. Next go with Honda. STAY AWAY FROM ALL FORD/LINCOLN/MERCURY products as well as Mazda and Nissan as they are in bed with Ford. Stay with Toyota. Buy a copy of Consumer Reports Guide to New and Used Cars and Trucks at your local book store. In it, you will find all you need to know about any car you may be interested in purchasing. Car fax reports are a thing to keep in mind most definately.

your best bet would be a used honda accord and civic or toyota camry or corolla. they are the most reliable cars on the road even if they have high mileage like the ones you will be getting for with your price range.

5K and reliability shouldn't be used together!
