I had a serious situation last year which prevented me from paying my taxes entirely and now my husband has been out of work for medical reasons and we can't keep up with paying the back tax. Are any of these firms that specialize in helping taxpayers by dealing with the the IRS real or are they scams? We don't know where to turn. The IRS is threatening to levy my income -our only source of income which means we can't pay mortage, car payments, electric, etc. Anyone?

The ones that adverise heavily are rip offs. They will charge you $5000 and do next to nothing.

Contact a CPA or EA in your local area and explain your situation. They can help you out.

Beware of companies telling you that they can settle with the IRS for less than owed. Most are scams. If you feel you must check into this contact a CPA or Enrolled Agent that you find in the yellow pages under tax preparation, if you situation is that complicated you need face to face service not phone contact. You probably don’t qualify for the IRS offer in compromise program.
IRS will work out a payment plan with you if you ask them. They will release the levy on you wages with an installment agreement. Terms are most liberal if you owe less than 25k. To enter into an IA you must come into compliance with the tax law which means you must fix the problem that caused you to owe by increasing withholding or estimated taxes and file and pay your taxes on time in the future. You can do this by calling the number on your notice or stopping by your local IRS office.

IRS is threatening to levy your wages because you have not offered or even tried to pay your balance. IRS works with you in making payments, have you made an installment agreement monthly payment.
Download form 9465 (installment agreement request) IRS can and will give you payment options, they give you up to 60 months to pay off your balance. So whatever you owe divide the balance by 60 and that is your monthly payment. If you can't pay download form 433-F from the website and provide all the requested information on form and IRS will tell you what you can afford.
Don't waste your time on money one those businesses that state they can help you with your IRS tax problems, what they do is take your money and pay themselves first and then if anything will start paying IRS, but by the time they do IRS have filed liens and levys on you.
IRS will work with you but if you ignore them then they have to do what they have to do.

The ones that advertise on TV are the next thing to scams. They'll charge huge sums to do what a local CPA or enrolled agent would do for a lot less - check with one of them..

Good luck.

Check with a Social agency in your town - they may be able to point you to a tax lawyer or accountant.
Good luck.
