I find when communicating with people they tend to not listen to the topic but more about something irrelevent?
ie: I was talking about how stupid my morning was with the fire alarm going off and all the little mishaps that happened becasue of it, and the people who were "listening" start lectureing me on how important fire alarms are. Where did I ever say or indicate that fire alarms aren't important?

No, Jennifer it was 3 people. 1 male. None of them knew the actual meaning of my story.

Ms.6 I don't just see it in my life. I'm sure some of my stories are as exciting as others, and I'm also sure you have the same problem. But this is a trend I see way too often in life.

I have learned a lot from the bad habits of others. I have worked for and with people who are not really listening, but rather they are waiting for me to stop talking so they can talk. It is very annoying. So, I force myself to respond to what people say even if I am not that interested, because I do not want to offend them. So many times, people will wait for others to stop talking so they can outdo me with their story. I remember who these people are and I try not to talk to them. It is often the same with people who ask you how you are doing, but they really don't care, and all they are doing is starting a conversation so they can talk. Your best bet is to minimize conversation with them. That's what I do.

As I tell my wife when she says anything to me 'What?" LOL
You are correct when you give examples of things that adversely at least in your mind, affect your daily life. As with your fire alarm, you implied that it was 'bad' even though that was not what you really meant. By implying that anything disrupts your normal way of life you do say it is bad. In your case the fire alarm took you away from your normal day. Now had you said you had to evacuate the building due to a fire and the fire alarm failed to go off you would not have been criticized, that is unless the fire alarm maintenance is part of your job duties.

I hear ya! : )
I think people in general are just becoming more and more self absorbed and thinking of what they're going to say instead of listening to what you're actually saying. Your point was to tell them the stories about your mishaps and they don't get it! BTW was the "listener" a man by any chance? I get better results when telling other women stories vs. my husband or other guys.

some people just like the sound of their own voice
some people just dont care, and take over conversations so they can get out of it.
Either way, its rude and I hope you listen to other people too. There is nothing you can really do.
Maybe when your talking to a person and the listener looks like hes not listening, politley ask, hey are you still listening?this is important to me?"
that should get their attention back.

It seems to be the way our society has gone. And what's more annoying than hearing three or more people on the news talking over each other. Part of our problem is that attention spans now equal that of a puppy.

Maybe your story bored them, and that reminded them to change their fire alarm? I am not trying to be rude, just giving you a different perspective. If this happens a lot then you may be a bore to some people.

I would have to say its a 50/50 split on listening. Yes people do lack listening skills and hear what they want but on the other hand the speaker sometimes does'nt word themselves right and translation gets lost.

Your stories probably aren't interesting to them. It happens, if you go on to long then people will stop listening, especially if it isn't that important or funny.

Yes, listening is a dying art, I say.
We have two ears & one mouth- the better to listen with & offer less unsolicited advice with!

ohhh hmmm some time it depends on who it is and what it is like a girlfriend telling her day to her boy friend or just a random person a good subject would be to say some thing like... hmmm " how was your day?" then in return they should respect to listen to you and about what you have to say
