Well, gee, folk, let's assume a few things:
1. That this question is serious, and that the ratio of gardeners to helicopter pilots loving origami is a reflection of Divine intervention or inspiration. At least, this is considered such a sign, among those who believe. Therefore, one must also discuss this possibly pertinent observation seriously.
2. The issue of relative numbers of gardeners to helicopter pilots is not stated as an absolute, but as a percentage of the poulation of each. So, to illustrate - if there are 100 gardeners and only 10 helicopter pilots, THEN if 2 helicopter pilots love origami, and 15 gardeners love origiami, the relative ration would be 20% of helicopter pilots versus only 15% of gardeners. This is a subject open to some debate about the validity but use of percentage of population can account for disparities in actual numbers.
Let us first deal with the assertion of believers that appreciation of origami reflects a statement of faith in a Deity. Concomitant with this statement is that gardeners are inherently less likely to believe in a Diety than helicopter pilots. This is so because the percentage of relative population is the measure - it takes more to convince gardeners than it does helicopter pilots - thus, if more gardeners believe, there is more popular support for the idea of a Deity.
There may be a reasonable argument that appreciation of origami is the result of Divine inspiration. I know that perspiration, dedication, and determination cannot make me capable of following instructions to fold aluminum foil into a swan-shaped restaurant take-home wrapping and I am not a believer. However, further testing on this is necessary to validate the assumption. it may also be that those who can construct origami simply have better left brain function than I.
There is a big problem with the definition of gardeners as inherently more skeptical than helicopter pilots in regard of susecptibility to belief. Here the argument demonstrably loses strength. First, gardeners work with natural processes, growing things, while helicopter pilots are trained in strict scientific methodologies. Only the realization that the majority of helicopter pilots are military personnel who pray to God constantly their machines won't fail and the bullets won't hit them contravenes this observation. For the assertion of this aspect of the relationship to succeed, the actual age and practical experience of all parties must be itemized or the conclusion simply cannot be supported.
Dealing with issue(2), the real problem is numbers, as well as the concept that popular support of belief in a diety in any way automaticaloly means there IS a Deity.
If both gardeners and helicopter pilots represent overall samll numbers of those within the entire population, then the sample is statiscally invalid. Of course, the "Canary in the mine"theorem may be counter-poised, but remember that birds' beliefs are a separate subject.
And as for popular support of belief in a Deity, would you cut off your nose just because all your friends do it?
EDIT: This is a completely worthless exercise if your source for the orginal basis of comparison mis-used the word "origami" and they meant "orgasm" instead. Please check it again and let us know.

Fabulous question. I must play devils advocate here; the fundamentalist christian would say, because the bible tells us that god works in mysterious ways.
The atheist would say, because of the slight variation in atmospheric pressure that the helicopter pilots must endure when going from ground to altitude, their hypothalimus excrets far less endorphins than that of the solitary gardener who lives and works on the ground. Due to this variation in endorphic activity, the gardener is more capable of doing common or 'boring', if you will, things, such as origami and still get enjoyment out of it (because of the extra endorphins).
The hellicoptor pilot must rise and fall suddenly in order to get that 'extra hit' of endorphins and can not sit still for long... and often have behaviousal illnesses such as ADHD and irritable bowel syndrone or IBS.
Furthermore, MOO!

Natural selection.
Helicopter pilots have a natural aversion to things that suddenly fold, because folding props are a BAD thing... this is easily proven by looking at fixed wing pilots, they're less resistant to origami.
Whereas gardeners are drawn to delicate pretty forms by choise, folding origami is like working a garden after all, you "create beauty with your hands" in both disciplines.
Yer a bit stupid not to know that... god disproven! Yay!

Because there are more gardeners than helicopter pilots.
Anyway, why does it have to be Japanese paper? Can't they fold British paper?

Ok, how about this: Because origami is the joy of crafting and creating, as is gardening. Piloting is done for thrills.

B/c they have a more relaxing job so they're better able to enjoy something a helicopter pilot would find a meaningless waste of time.
Doubt you were serious but, philosophically, it would make more sense, don't 'cha think?

You got me there. I'll have to ask Kent if he's into origami or just flying.
My father was a bomber pilot who wasn't into origami. But he was a heck of a gardener.
