Pro: It gets people into colleges who would have no other way to qualify.
Con: It gets people into colleges who are not really scholastically qualified to be there while taking up seats that could be occupied by legitimate students.

Pro: Good teams in the major sports bring a lot of money into the school's treasury.
Con: Count on the money and you are almost certain to have a down year.

Pro: It keeps the alumni interested and donating.
Con: Losing seasons annoy the alumni to no end and they begin calling for coaches' heads on platters.

Pro: A lot of young players are now able to get to their real chosen athletic profession sooner, like in one year after high school. This also opens up that seat they were supposed to be sitting in for another student.
Con: A lot of young players who are not physically or emotionally ready for the professional game and lifestyle are entering them at the age of 19 or 20.

Colleges only have X amount of scholarships that they can grant. If they give them all to athletes, then who's going to graduate? They need to give some of their scholarships to those who excel in engineering, science, arts, botany (whatever the University specializes in) so that they can attract talent in educational fields as well. Remember, a university is supposed to be educating a student, not being a minor league for pro sports.

what about the people who have the intelligence, but not the athleticism? don't they have more of the right to go to college, over those who will just help the college team win?
