If you live somewhere where it snows in the winter, I would highly recommend a Subaru Impreza! It has AWD so it is very safe in the snow, it gets fairly good gas mileage for an AWD car, Subaru prides themselves on getting 5 star safety ratings in every single category, so it is one of the safest cars made. It has a great resale value, 10 year old Legacy sedans with 150,000 miles in good shape are still going for up to 6,000 dollars!!
The Impreza comes in a variety of models, sedan, wagon, outback, WRX, 2.5RS.... I recommend the Wagon if you carry a lot of cargo, and the sedan if you dont. If you need some extra performance the 2.5RS model is great!
Also, if the Impreza is too small, the Legacy is another great choice. It is a full size sedan that also has AWD standard. It comes in sedan, wagon, and outback models as well. It is more luxurious, especially the newer ones, and the new (05 and newer) Legacy GT Limited has a 250HP engine and the interior is like a luxury car!!

If you do not experience snow in the winter (lucky you) I would recommend something from the following:
Honda Accord coupe, Honda Civic,Honda Fit, Honda CRX, Honda Prelude, Acura Integra, Acura TL, Acura RL, Toyota Camry, Toyota Solara, Toyota Corolla 'S', Toyota Celica, anything from Lexus, Mazda3, Nissan Altima, Maxima, Versa
Scion tC,
Good Luck hope this info helps!

It depends on what your going to use it for. DON'T get a honda though. If you want an import go with Mitsubishi, Toyota, or Nissan. Also, it depends on how much you get to spend a car on, but I would never go over $6,000 on a first car because over 50% of the people wreck their first. You can get Hyundai's and Kia's cheap. (Their resale isn't good, but that means you can get them cheap, year 2000+) If you are looking at SUV's go with like Ford for instance, I own one and it's a really nice reliable car. Since it is your first car, get a Front Wheel Drive, or All Wheel Drive, for bad weather occurances. Plus they have better handling. Front wheel drive cars usually have better gas mileage also. Or if their are cars you have in mind, look up the reports/reviews on MSN auto's or Edmunds.

Don't ask for something too expensive or nice, or when something happens to it, your gonna be mad. Lots of new drivers make costly mistakes while driving and vehicles often get crashed. If you have something too nice, and you wreck it, your gonna be mad.

Buy something cheap and reliable. Pretty much any Honda, Toyota, or Nissan would work. If you live in a snowy climate, Subaru's are also very nice.

Keep in mind that older vehicles often need work, so sometimes a good buy may need some work. Tires and brakes are common repairs that are needed.

I recommend very good handling and medium to low horse power.
like a mazda 3 if your getting something new,
or something older, think about a nissan as they have timing chains not timing belts, this means that there is no major maintenance ever needed.

don't get a civic unless it is a race version as the suspension is not good all the low end ones, one patch of sand at 45mph during a lane change and it will spin out.
a life is not worth saving a few thousand for an unsafe handling yet popular and over priced car; don't ever get a civic, even if they are reliable.

The best cars to get (new or used) would be a Toyota or Honda..Cant go wrong with either one...

If youre getting a new car check out the Scions (theyre "young people toyotas" LOL) not really, theyre like really customizable and fun...I just got my Scion xD in August..awesomeness..

A used or new Corolla or Civic would also be GREATTTTT!

Depends on who is making the car payments & paying for the insurance & gas. If you have to pay for gas, make sure you stay away from the SUV's, cuz it gets expensive. I need more info to really answer the question, but I would say a VW, Honda, or Nissan would be good (older model of course)

No doubt you will have to pay for gas, so I would be looking at cars that get good gas mileage. When It all comes down to it, your dream car is not the car you get when you turn 16.

i would recommened a small car with small cc's. For insurance purposes. Build up those "no claimes bonuses"
Also a small car will be more manoeuverable for somene less experienced.. When more experienced in driving, let your sweet 16 choose a car thats more comfortable :-))
