"Attention Parents: The Golden Compass is a movie that is coming to "Any City" on Dec. 7th. We would like to give all of you a friendly warning about this movie. It is based on a book written by Phillip Pullman, a proud atheist who hates CS Lewis's Chronicals of Narnial. He wrote three books to show the other side. The movie has been dumbed down to fool kids and their parents in the hope that they will buy his trilogy where at the end of the third book the children kill God and everyone can do as they please. If you would like to know more about this movie, you can go to Snopes. com. "

This was a note sent home at a local school.

So, what do you think?

It is a PUBLIC school.

If it's a public school they should be taken to court for promoting religion and violating the separation of church and state. If it were a Catholic school it would be one thing... but a public school is LEGALLY not allowed to condone or promote religion, which is exactly what this note is doing.

Contact local media and a lawyer.

God doesn't belong in the schools and the schools should not be advising parents on what movies to see with their children.

I'd call the principal and school board and ask just what are they up to? This is religious hogwash and doesn't belong in a letter home to parents.

The only time I can ever remember a letter being sent home about a movie was when Jurassic Park came out. They were warning parents that the movie may be too intense for elementary school students and recommended that parents see it before letting their children go.

None of the respondents to your question likely knows how accurate is your reporting of this incident. Frankly, I don't think it sounds too unlikely for California public school standards, but that's beside the point. The real issue is the usurping of parental authority. While parents have a responsibility to be informed regarding their decisions, they don't answer to the school for that. Any and all authority that education officials have over a child is delegated from that child's parents or guardians. I have complete and total veto authority regarding any decision that a teacher or school administrator makes concerning my child, or my child is removed from that environment. If these presentations depict homosexuality as anything but abhorrent, they are inappropriate and my child will not be exposed to them.

Honestly I can only see that note being sent home if your child attends a private school. If it is a private school, assuming you probably have some sort of religious beliefs if you are allowing your child to attend it should not bother you, they decided to give you a friendly warning.
If its a public school it is odd because of the no religion in school thing, and they could possibly offend atheist parents.
If you are concerned and it is a PUBLIC school I would talk to the principal.

A public school? That's totally and completely inappropriate. Was it really from the school, or from a parent? I'd be tempted to send a copy of the letter to the local media, which could shame the school into acting more reasonably. But what I'd probably do is send a letter to the district school superintendant asking how this is an appropriate letter for a public school to send....

I think the school has seriously overstepped their boundaries, and I wouldn't have a problem with telling them so. What movie a parent allows their children to see should be up to the parent. If you are considering taking the kids to that movie, or any movie, see it first without them and then make up your mind.

Is this a private church school? I don't know why a public school would be sending this out. It is up to the parents whether they want their kids to see it or not. If it is a church school they should still let the parents make up their own mind.

I think it is just a kind of warning. Just like we have ratings of movies kids should watch and which ones they should not.
