My daughter is 11 and she wants an mp3 player, we found a really cool one from Dell that has an FM radio also for $40, my daughter has also said she wants gift cards. If your neice is a girly girl they have great stuff at Bath and Body works.

You could also find out if she likes Hannah Montana, my daughter likes her, and you could find something in that category as well. I don't know if I would buy her clothes or shoes unless you know it is specifically what she wants.

I know my daughter is at the point now where she is picky about her clothes and she is specific about colors etc.

i think lotions, lip glosses, and some makeup (not crap, but like drugstore eyeshadow and blush and stuff). She will want to experiment with makeup, but won't want to dig through mom's stuff. Gift cards are great too! I don't recomend getting anything with a logo or characters on it (except classics like candy names, sodas, that type of thing) like High School Musical even if she loves it, because she might be embarressed to wear it to school. Getting the DVD is fine, just no clothes or purses, etc.

if she is 11, go to any of those cute girl stores like limited 2 or american eagle and buy some clothes. you should know about what size she is if you have seen her. get a shirt or sweater for her and maybe some jewelry from claires (that store is cheap and cute). when girls get clothes from name brand stores they always like it...even if the clothes are ugly! they just see the brand name and love it. and as for jewelry, i loved getting this at 11. they have packages of like 10 sets of earrings for only about $6.

I would ask her parents.
Is she into webkinz? A lot of kids from about 6-12 are.
Does she have an IPod? Maybe a gift card for music to load onto it?

. And girls this age are usually very active and have tons of friends why not get a camera and things for a scrap book? Just a disposable camera for starters just to give her an idea of how to do things. Stickers papers etc or a ready make scrapbooking kit. My kids loved theirs

Mall gift certificate, cd, dvd, small make up set, nail polish, set of brushes, combs etc...you know like the packages they sell at christmas. Or a set with body lotion, shampoo, etc.. movie passes to the local theather (2..one for her and one for a friend)

i think that i agree with the other answers-a gift card.
it's truly the safest way no matter who the gift is for.
i know that when i was eleven i was a bit relieved when i got a gift card, because then there is no awkwardness about whether she likes the gift or not.
that's just me.
best of luck!
