we would like to take my father in law to visit his ancestory town of kilkenny, and we will be flying from newcastle airport. which is the best airport in ireland to travel to, if we want to get to kilkenny(or as close as)? And can anyone recommend things to do when we get there? bear in mind my father in law will be 70, but still loves a night out and couple of drinks in nice quiet(ish) pubs. he would also like to look around the area where his parents and ancestors lived.
any help would be greatly appreciated,thankyou.x.

Your choice is Dublin and Cork. Cork would be a little closer and easier to get out off. Dublin can be a bottle neck to get out of. A good map will give you the directions from either place. The roads are well sign posted so no worries there.
Kilkenny is a good spot, historically and socially. If you look up the Irish Tourist Board on the web they should give you a list of good pubs, and things to do there.

Dublin is the best airport for you to get to Kilkenny, and there are very few quiet pubs in Dublin, for drink along the ways of your travels, but if you like a noisy drink, there are no better pubs anywhere in the known world than in Dublin. If I were you I would wait until you get away out of the Dublin area altogether, and enjoy a quiet drink in a doad-side house somewhere. If you are driving from Dublin find the A 9 and plan a nice stop over at crookstown or even Casteldermot, and take a nice slow lunch too, and these two places have a wonderfilled history of their own for ye to enjoy.
Anyway Have a great holiday with your Father-in Law, and let him enjoy the things he wants to do too, if ye get into Kilkenny town, he with be thrilled with all the history that it has to its credit.He is certain to love the whole experience of this memorable trip you are taking him on..Good Luck, and God bless you for taking the time with him, and slainte' too. I think the nearest airport would be Dublin, however, if I were you I would also check out flights to Cork airport, because it is easier and faster to get around Cork city and onto the main Waterford road, which would be the most direct way to reach Kilkenny from Cork, especially if you arrive at rush hour times.
You could drive as far as Dungarvan, then on towards Waterford, and when you see the sign for Carrick-on-Suir, turn off for this town, it's a few miles further on, and you could go across the bridge and then take the main Dublin road from Carrick-on-Suir, which takes in Kilkenny.
Alternatively you could go on through Waterford and take the main road to Dublin for Kilkenny.
By Kilkenny I mean Kilkenny city. If he's from County Kilkenny, post another question and I'll check it out on the map for you. I know the country, I grew up around there.

I think you'd probably be best flying into Dublin airport. Your father in law will love Kilkenny and all it's true Irish pubs. Have a great time.

Probably Dublin airport. Kilkenny is lively but also has some lovely Irish pubs. Don't worry you will find lots to do. Its a great place.

You probably will be better off going to Cork airport rather than Dublin, because although Dublin is slightly nearer it's likely to take a shorter time to get to Kilkenny from Cork airport. I drove it recently, it takes about two hours.

Dublin or cork but i would say the drive from cork to kilkenny along the coast is really nice and scenic....

Cork airport would be best. You might have less choice in flights to Cork so look at flights to Dublin as well. Check out http://www.kilkennytourism.ie/eng/Things_To_Do/
