Hang a little bell from a cord and attach it to the door handle at the same level as the dog's nose. When it's time to go outside, ring the bell first, say "go potty" and then let the dog out. Make sure the bell is large enough so you can hear it, but not so loud it scares the dog.
My in-laws trained their dog this way, and it works very well, especially when they are distracted and not paying attention to the dog, because they can always hear that little bell. It also impresses company.
I don't recommend training dogs with food. Dogs should be trained to work for and respond to praise from its owners. This helps reinforce the owner as the pack leader, and it also prevents the dog from asking to go outside ten times a day just so it can get a treat, which believe me, some dogs will do. Then you'll spend the rest of your dog's life never knowing if it has to pee or if it just wants a Milkbone.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aL6uF
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Tie a bell on a string to the door and every time the dog uses the pad take it to the door and put it's nose to the bell to make it ring then take it (the dog) outside. This will also save on replacing doors from scratches. Your dog will learn to ring the bell to be let outside. This is also great for when your in another room or sleeping.

Target training. Place a target, like a piece of cardboard with an X on it. Put something like peanut butter on it for the dog to be attracted to the smell. When your dog needs to go out and you are there seeing this, take your dog to the door and have them see the target and make them touch their nose to the door first. Praise them for doing this, go up to making your dog sit, and have them give you their paw or shake, put the paw on the door and then praise, make the target smaller and smaller, praise the dog when they do this. You can put bells hanging from the doorknob as well for them to hit with their nose or paw for a signal that they want to go out. This will take some time. Eventually you will take the target off and praise the dog for doing this everytime they do so in the beginning.

It is my opinion that is better to create a routine of scheduled walks and bathroom breaks. Dogs love routines and they are key to successful housetraining. If one teaches a dog to alert you when it wants to go out, whether it is by bell or scratching at the door, all to often the dog suddenly have to "go" more often than normal. You see - they learn how to get you to let them outside whenever they want. This can lead to a dog that makes more and more of it's own decisions and become more and more disobedient. Become your dogs leader and tell it when, where and what to do at all times. Your dog will thank you for it by becoming more obedient, loyal and reliable.

Dog learns everything very fast, so it's very important to give proper training by a good trainer. You can also train a puppy for basic things like teaching a dog to shake hands, stop barking, not to bite and potty training etc. If you need some special training tips, to correct dog training, consult an experienced dog trainer. A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/530mZ
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

My dog just does that when she's ready. She's 9 years old and she taught herself... the whole positive reinforcement is opening the door when they do scratch.
