I have an 16 mo. old male neutered YorkiePoo, with 2 seperate issues.
1. We have a finished basement and ANY time he is down there,he will mark the carpet. He never ever goes potty upstairs and always goes to the door when he needs to go out. We have just stopped allowing him down there. I would like to let him down there, but don't see how to stop his marking.
2. Also, we went to my sister's house (she has a male dog) and the first thing my dog did was went to the dining room table and marked the leg of the table! Why did he do this inside?....and how can we prevent this at her house, or anywhere else indoors in the future? I am scared to take him anywhere else indoors because I don't want him peeing!! Please offer any rational advice.
Thank you!
P.S. I also have a 9 yr. old spayed female Shihtzu who we've had since she was a baby. My Yorkie Poo is very submissive to her, as she let it be known when we got him that she was Queen Bee. (didn't know if this had anything do with it)

he is just marking his turf. and he may be trying to be the alpha dog over the other even though it isn't his home. no worries just let him down there and let him mark his turf a few times then he will stop doing it

I've never had a male dog do that before, and maybe someone else has better advice. However, I would call my vet and ask for a recommendation for one of those products that you spray in and around areas dogs mark to prevent them from doing that in the future. There are a lot of them out there, so I'd get a recommendation before buying one so you know you're getting one that works.

This is definitely a dominance issue, and he is letting other dogs know that he's in town so to speak. He will have to be retrained to accept you as the pack leader and he will have to learn to live at the bottom of the pack. You can read books about this or ask your vet to recommend a trainer.

I only keep referring you to your vet because my vet has a huge network of people that can help with any kind of dog issue out there, and he's a great resource. I would think all vets have resources like this since animals are their business.

The dog should be crated or attached to you at the hip every single instant when you cannot supervise him, and never allowed in the bedroom again. The number one mistake people make with crates is they only use them when they're away from home and/or asleep, thinking the dog should have freedom to roam un-supervised when the humans are home. Do not be afraid to start having that dog spend time in it even when you're home, just too busy to keep an eye on him. If you are doing crate training but the dog still has an opportunity to go in the bedroom and pee there, you are defeating the purpose of crate training.

Firstly, clean that carpet with an enzymatic cleaner such as Urine Gone or Nature's Miracle. Lysol, etc won't cut it (and additionally, many cleaners are harmful to your dogs' health) You need to get rid of the smell completely and using those cleaners will do it.
Secondly, do not allow your dog access to the basement for a while. You've taken an effective step here already.
Don't let your dog off leash to roam and mark. Keep him leashed to you, which may seem awkward but is actually a small price to pay for a well-behaved dog. You want to nip this behavior in the bud. I have friends who did not do this with their Havanese and now he has to wear a diaper, all the time. He does nothing but mark compulsively - it's very sad. Good luck!

The marking at the house with another dog is a dominance thing, not so much a "potty training" thing.

You can only correct if you catch a dog in the act. You can't punish them after the fact.

I would keep him out of the basement.

When you are not home to supervise, have him crated.

tips for potty training
our dog trainer says use chicken liver as a treat when they potty outside with alot of praise. when u take him out and she does go praise her and give a treat to her if he goes inside don't give her anything. Use the kennel when u take her out of it take her out right away when she is done eating or drinking take her out and before u put her back into the kennel. Use the kennel to train when done playing with her take her out then when u bring her in put her in the kennel take her back out with in a half hour to see if she goes but use alot of praise and a treat when she does go outside. give also time for food to digest and for her to go outside before u put her in for the night cut off the water and food at a certain time
