Generally speaking police officers don't get paid well...not for the type of work they perform.

The reason officers do the work is because they have a general concern for their communities and the welfare of those they help.

Best wishes for your future!

I have been a Sheriff's Deputy in Nashville Tn for 8 years and I make over mid 30's. The thing is I am not an actual Police Officer. I am a supervisor in the County Jail. That beig said I worked in booking for 2 years and worked hand to hand with Police officers. First let me say that in Nashville most Metro Police officers make mid to low 50's in their first year. That's base pay, plus overtime, plus court time. They also get very good side jobs that pay anywhere from 20.00/hour to 35./hour. So money wise, being a police officer can pay well depending on where you are. As far as danger is concerned, someone answered earlier that it is not one of the most dangerous jobs, well I will say that the jobs he listed may pose some threat and people get hurt/and or killed doing them, but outside of the military there is no other job where you could be faced with someone intentionally trying to harm/or kill you. Last year a female officer was shot multiple times and paralyzed while taking a report on a domestic violence call. She was ambushed by the complanints husband who had left the scene before she even arrived. There are many intances like this all over the U.S. with police officers involved. So to whom it may concern everyone doesn't live in Mayberry. That was not meant to scare you, that was only meant to inform you that there is danger involved with the job, but knowing that when you enter will keep you on your toes and alert. You have to really want to do this job in order to be successful, money should not be a motivation factor, for that could easily lead to you being harmed because you're not focused on the most important thing, and that is going home the same way you came in.

Police make on average nationwide $45,000
If you live in a major city then you will make more usually, for example in Los Angeles, CA you start off at $54,000 for LAPD.
A lot of Police officers retire as a cop except when they get to the age of around 35+ they start looking for desk jobs around the department. Mainly because they have growing families by that age.

My husband made a very nice living. Pay is based on the current cost of living. State Police get paid more than your local town police. There are also Sheriffs Dept, Prison guards, local constables, etc. Usually in any law enforcement job...20 years of work you are ready for retirement. It is a hard living and you are ready to retire in 20 years of work. Those that stay on longer....usually stay with a desk job. Many of these jobs now require a college degree, which they didn't in my husband's day. Talk to your school guidance counselor. Good Luck....it's a rewarding career.

Their salary varies where you are stationed. If you're stationed in Suffolk county, believe it or not, you'll get paid more than in Nassau. You need to take the civil service test and once they tell you to come down and take the test, be prepared they could make you do the physical test the same day. Most people become officers because they want to do something positive in their lives and help out where they can.

You are just repeating what they tell themselves over and over, to boost their ego.

"how much do they get paid??" In Connecticut, pay starts in the mid $30s during training, and they're talking about raising the pay after graduation to the $50s. Not bad, for kids straight out of high school without a sniff of college life!

"I heard they don't get paid much so why would they risk there life for nothing?"
OK, myth #1 is busted. In some states, the pay is very good. NOw, for their ego deflation: Their job IS NOT AMONG THE MOST DANGEROUS.
Those are:
1 Fishers and fishing workers
2 Logging workers
3 Aircraft pilots
4 Structural iron and steel workers
5 Refuse and recyclable material collectors
6 Farmers and ranchers
7 Electrical power line installers/repairers
8 Driver/sales workers and truck drivers
9 Miscelleneous agricultural workers
10 Construction laborers

So you see, being a cop is nowhere near the dangerous list, for all they want people to believe that. Part 2: THEY ARE NOT RISKING THEIR LIVES FOR NOTHING. They get paid exceedingly well, and will not do anything they aren't paid for. They call for backups as needed, to the point where their occupation is NOT considered dangerous by any serious guidelines.

" how long do they work?"
In my town, they can put in all the overtime they want! The cruiser is free, with all expenses paid, for them to drive at leisure in teh state. They aren't complaining!

One catch: The job is monotonous and boring, and guys who are very intelligent are not selected because they'd quit after realizing they can do better. In fact, most people work as cops because they can't find anything better that pays as well.
