The original Richard Bach quote:

"If you love someone, set them free. If they come back they're yours; if they don't they never were."

The quote you posted is a humorous, albeit sarcastic, take on Richard Bach's feel-good statement about love. It appears in a wide range of sources, but is mostly attributed to "anonymous." It also appears on bumper stickers and t-shirts as:

"If you love someone set them free! If they don't come back, hunt them down and kill them."

Similar sarcastic quotes about love are:

"You cannot make someone love you, but you can make them pay."

"Love may be blind, but marriage is a real eyeopener."

It's a play on the old saying "If you love someone set them free, if they come back to you they're yours, if they don't they never were." Some of the saying replace someone with the word something. This one seems to lend itself towards a very jealous person. Kind of like "If I can't have you, no one can!". It is used in a tongue and cheek manner most of the time, dark humor. The original quote meant that you can not capture love or try to hold onto love. It has to be mutual. Lots of info on this quote online.

It means that people do things thinking that they have a certain purpose for what they're doing and never realize that what they're doing actually accomplishes a quite different thing that they never thought about. Someone might go fishing thinking that what they're there for is to catch fish, when what's really valuable to them about going fishing is the peace and quiet and time to think, or for some it will be the time they spend with their friends while fishing.

I highly doubt you have to do a school essay on that. It's a dumb send off of the original quote.

The answer to your question is, the words are very obvious. It's not cryptic at all. If you love someone, set them free to see if they come back to you. If they don't then kill them. Simple.

It's a parody of an actual quote,

If you love something
set it free
If it is meant to be yours
It will return to you.

Or something like that.
