Sony have discontinued production of the 60GB model. They issued a statement in October that it's due to "consumer feedback", and the aim was to lower production costs & the retail price with the 40GB model. So, the 60GB has quickly become rarer than a Nintendo Wii. If you're lucky you may find a store somewhere that hasn't sold all the 60GBs yet - otherwise the 40GB is the only option in the UK for now. It's basically the same as the 60GB - the main thing missing is backwards capabilities with PS2 games

I am pretty sure that they discontinue with the 60GB and focus more on the 80GB, because when the 60GB first came out. It was a $600, then like months later the price drop and they made the 80GB model at one hundred dollar less. That kind of funny how a bigger memory can be more cheap. And i heard that the 40GB model doesnt have backward capalibilty. So i think the 80GB price is worth it.

They have stopped manufacturing the 60GB Model and started focus on the 40GB model. The reason they are priced at £600 is because shops no longer have them in stock, and people want it because of the backwards compatibility and all the rest of it so these 'traders' can get as much for the console as possible.

just got a 60gb off e-bay for £450 brand new in box.1 free game with it.asked around before buying and it seems the 60gb is no longer being made, hence steep prices.,40gb is ok entry level machine ,60gb is the must have and 80gb is ok but not perfect.thats why we went for an 60gb.make sure its uk spec as there are quite a few imports for sale and i wouldnt trust someone saying yeah it works fine with an adapter.almost bought one which looked good deal till saw 1 line in description saying country of origin Japan!

The new 80 Gig is now the same price as the old, now discontinued 60 Gig. It includes all the bells and whistles- memory card ports, 4 usb ports, and PS2 emotion engine. The 40 Gig is cheaper, but has no memory ports, 2 usb ports, and no backwards compatibility with PS2 titles...

They had stopped doing it because of cost reduction. NTSC version had two chips from PS2, PAL version had one. Sony calculated the costs and decided to make a cheaper NTSC 80GB (has one PS2 chip) and 40GB for all three regions (has no PS2 chips at all). There is no 80GB version for PAL regions at all.
