Ok...what about embryonic insemination? (sp big time) She would still be a virgin (up until the birth since she didn't have sex, right? Perhaps I'm wrong in reasoning here, and if so, then you guys get free two points.
I know that there was no such thing during those times, but perhaps aliens, Atlanteans? Who knows? But perhaps that's the answer to the "mystery" of the virgin birth? Just wondering.
All serious answers welcomed, all sarcastic answers will be luaghed at (if funny) and all mean answers, will probably be laughed at as well.

I'm an atheist, I'm just trying to figure out how they could come up with stuff like that...and it's true, there have been many virgin births, since technically they never had sex...^_^

Jan Jan Jan...I've read the Bible several times, cover-to-cover. I have plenty of spare time as well., hence I'm here answering and asking questions. And how do you expect the human race to progress if we do not know how the world works? Or as a soceity? Or as an individual? By your logic I can drop out of school since I just "have faith" that Ducharse means "to shower" in Spanish, etc. Right? I suppose I SHOULD do that, since it's all Gods work, and it doesn't matter....ugh...

You are assuming the one factual item was that the birth was, in fact, to a virgin?
The ancient Aramaic term used for Mary was the equivalent of the older uses of "youth" or "maiden" - both of which simply indicate she was a young person, but are not calling out her sexual status. The use of Maiden as a boy or girl continued for hundreds of years in the Germanic languages - to this day the word "Madchen" is neuter in gender, even though it now applies to girls alone.
The Church decided Mary was virginal. It was debated quite a lot over the years since the text does not say she was. But the vote has continued to be that she should be considered a virgin when Jesus was born. Her status as a virgin is important in a Church system that values abstinence in their clergy, including nuns, and abstinence in their young adherents as well. Virginity was highly valued in brides of the day and so it made her status higher, She could be held up as an example to young women. They were also overlaying the religion on older religions which had used the "virgin birth" several times before - so it gave Jesus better "street cred" as having supernatural origins, which were important for the early church to establish and uphold.
Poor Mary. She married a man and had a child, but her sexual status at that birth is all some people care about her. Joseph did not marry her to cover her unexpected pregnancy - at the time it would have disgraced them both and the dictates would have run towards abortion or exposure. He married her conventionally and they would have slept together and lived as a married couple before she conceived, regardless of the nature or future of her son. God does not need invitro, he is supposed to make each life, right? So he made Jesus his own, regardless of Mary's sexual history or lack thereof. Her hymen has no bearing on Jesus' life or relevancy.

personally, i could care less if she was a virgin or not. she gave birth to a great moral teacher. my guess though is that she was covering up an indiscretion....
EDIT - i really like Amy R's answer regarding the whole virgin classification; sound reasoning that we just misinterpreted the meaning of the word that was used....(see below)

well, i personally think that GOD sent little white droplettes from the sky and some accidentally landed into her uterus because she was doing naked handstands outside the stables :D ... of course she wasn't a friggin virgin... but you'll never catch a christian saying that :P

Well, technically, one can get pregnant naturally without penetration... Thus, there has been more than one virgin giving birth over the years.

No its much simpler than that. A man c*me in his hand and then he rubbed it into Mary's p*ssy. No complex embryonic insermination and if you don't think doesn't work try it.

It's allegory. Overshadowed by Holy Ghost is as being duped by a Law Priest. That's why Jesus called Mary "Woman". The woman, being deceived, was in the transgression (the law).

no the virgin birth thing is more about the purity of mary than actually figuring out how God did it.

I think that it's way easier to assume that Joseph was a simpleton and Maria could as well sell any pup to him. Or do you really think that anyone did a virginity check on her?

You know, I don't know how much time you have but maybe you should spend some of It reading the Bible. We don't have to figure it out. We are only asked to have faith.

No, it was simply a miracle.
If God exists, then there's no reason why a virgin can't give birth, if He allows her to. Some things just defy explanation.
