Yes, go slowly as it is healthier for your hair. If very dark, lighten up one shade at a time and also if blond, darken one shade at a time. I love red hair too but you have to have the right coloring. All hair coloring is slightly damaging to natural hair so really consider if you want to do that at all. Maybe start with some highlights/lowlights first and see how that goes.
