Jhn 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

Do you know the origin of 'turn the other cheek'? What it's meaning was in Jewish society at the time?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turn_the_other_cheek#Figurative_interpretation
The same thing with giving the guy your cloak as well as your tunic, and carrying a burden further than a mile.
(The first is against Jewish law, making the person demanding the tunic a criminal, the second was from Roman legionaries being able to demand the Jews carry their load, but only for one mile, again forcing them to break the law)
This is the language of revolt, not the language of the meek.

You do need to return the "favor" just hard enough to make sure it is not coming again. For some people a searing glance will do after they slap you, for other people, you need to feed them to a bear.
The scale is the smallest amount needed to convince the other person not to repeat the act. Some people just can't take a hint....or a restraining order.
