Fight to live. The truth will never become that clear. The spiritual realm, that you connect with to a degree in your sleep, and will connect again with when you die, will not give you all the answers. Nothing in life is free, one must work to gain spiritual knowledge. Meditation/prayer, mind-body exercises, eating healthy, not overindulging, and looking for good inspiration from all available sources can help. It is a good start to recognize, that one has a spirit that survives death. Reincarnation of the continuous form, will keep you in this reality of this universe, and not allow for any escape from the responsibilities of this reality. It respects the struggle of life, and how this struggle gets the most out of the human spirit and human potential. Don't give up the fight, to learn the most about the spiritual, through the real world and its problems, that can really test the human spirit.

I feel like I've made some great spiritual steps in my life recently as well and I've had strange thoughts about dying soon. Ironically weird to read your question. Another mentioned Buddhism before and I must say that is the main source of my recent spiritual "rebirth". To answer your question I think that being close to death and knowing it would put everything in perspective and perhaps provide the perfect state of mind for spiritual clarity to form. Nobody knows the answers, but that's my best guess.

Death brings a sharp focus on eternity. That is natural because God has put the knowledge of Himself in every man so that none of us will have an excuse for not believing in Him.
Romans 1:19-20
As far as being damned is concerned - God made a door of escape for us when Jesus died for our sins.
Being a monk won't help. There is nothing we can do to earn our eternal salvation. Christ did it all on Calvary.
Love with a woman is perfectly normal for Christians and is not forbidden by God. It is sex outside of the marriage relationship that is forbidden, and that includes any sex that is not heterosexual.
If you want perfect peace in your soul, pray with complete sincerity and from your heart and ask God to forgive you for your sins and to take control of your life. If your heart is true and pure in this God will deliver you from all your unnecessary fears.

i am an atheist... since i have read The God Delusion this got stuck in my brain
We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively outnumbers the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here.

Most of our lives are lived within some version of a sort of Pareidolia.
It allows us to make sense of stuff when all of reality is chaos.
Life is not meant to be easy, my child; but take courage -- it can be delightful. George Bernard Shaw
