I vote for "independent being."
I also think that consciousness is more than just the end result of neurons firing across synapses, too, but that's a whole nother question.

The way you phrase your question with the 'or' clause limits the possibilities that you will accept as an answer. You see it as either one or the other possibilities, thus you will look in the answers for something to confirm one of your 'theories'. They have to be 'theories' because you don't know.
Okay, with that said I answer you question.
God exists both inside and outside of yourself.
Your consciousness is reflected in your thoughts, thoughts result as a neurological product of the brain, but the cause behind this effect is God, or who you are behind all the words.

The God Yahweh exists as an independant being. Who or What God actually is is still open for debate. There is a non-human scientific mind that exists out there somewhere that is alive and well and is still watching every move mankind makes.

The "being" of God is independent of man, but we are not independent of him.
Even the fact that it is necessary to say that says a lot about this day we live in, which is truly the end time.

If God arises from your neuronal groups does that have to mean he is "just" a product of the brain? Can't he arise from there and be elsewhere? Does he have to be only independent in existence or could he also be integral in everything (both immanent and transcendant)?

Go ask your hero, Sammy Harris. That fool actually thinks once he secures his Ph.D in Neuroscience (which is being paid for by all the nutjobs buying his book), that he's going to isolate the "neural basis" of faith.
Didn't the Nazis conduct really horrible and bizarre experiments on Jews?

I wonder the same about everything I experience. How do I know it is substantial or just some kind of "matrix"? I don't!
So, it is an arbitrary choice to immerse myself within experience and believe it to be truth. To say to myself "if life is a movie, then let me at least suspend disbelief and enjoy it"

God is that He is. Nothing else is like Him. Can the creation be like the Creator? I don't think so.
Did you know that our God has NO Name!! It's true, all names that we give Him, only discribes Him and even that is not good enouph. He is unique and yet we are so much like Him. It's imposible to explane.
