Actually, only in the US can you not play for real money. In other countries you can. So, while it may be true that they make money from advertising, they also make money on real money tables by taking a "rake" each hand. That means for every pot that is played, they take a small percentage of the pot out as profit before the winner takes the pot.

Advertisements. If i'm not mistaken, they don't allow real money play (like PokerStars), so they can't invest the real money players put into the site and take the dividends, but they do get over a million hits per day and companys pay lots of money for that kind of exposure.
