When I was at unıversity...my greek neighbour told me that the Turks went into Aya Sofia and spread paint all over Jesus Christ....how true is this? he said that 'no amount of paint can erase the spirit of Jesus'. I now live in Istanbul and I am fascinated by the fact that this used to be Constantinople...A major Christian city. Can anyone give anymore information on this incredible city?

Firstly,i have to say some people still have problems with Turks having the the city and that's why they tell lies. Turks turned the church into a mosque. So they honored it as a holy temple once again. If you can visit, you will see it with your own eyes.

The first settlements in the city goes back to 5500–3500 BC, on today's Kadıköy.Greek colonies first settled on European side and after Roman emperor Constantin founded a great city on these lands,he named it after himself. City remained as Eastern Roman empire's capital until Turkish conquest in 1453 by Sultan Mehmed II.Once again the city was capital, but for Turks this time.

The truth is, icons are banned in Islam. Islam sees this as worshipping icons. When Ayasofya was turned into a mosque, the paintings were covered with, I don't know, mortar, I think. That's the reason they are preserved so well all through centuries.

But your friends' putting it shows it like vandalism, which it wasn't. Vandalism happened elsewhere, for example to Sumela Monastery in Maçka and the little churches around the area after the Orthodox inhabitants were sent to Greece. And if you take into account that the same was done to many mosques in Greece after the Muslims were sent away to Turkey, you can look at things impartially.

War and ethnic clash are ugly.

Edit: Thanks, Babe, you are right, too. :)

Edit 2: I feel a certain calm descending over me. Is Xanax aro... oh, yes. Hi, Xanax, you are right, by the way!
