For anyone who puts up a tree for Yule, Christmas, etc., which do you prefer. Those celebrating Yule, must it be a live tree or can you have an artificial tree?

Personally, I hate artificial trees, but we have one because my firefighter husband has this hang-up about flammable stuff in the house, like drying evergreen branches. But I can see now the benefits of artificial trees for people with pets or health problems. Thanks.

My Yule tree is artificial. I know it should be a real tree, but the fake has more meaning for me. I grew up celebrating Christmas. I've never had a real tree. My parents discovered my older brother was very allergic to them at his first Chrismas. So they bought an artificial. I have such fond memories of assembling the tree, fighting to untangle the lights, decorating it as a family. I loved the tradition of the same tree being used for years. So when I got a place of my own, I chose to buy an artificial tree so when I someday marry and have kids, I can help pass on the traditions I so loved all these years. It is this sentimental reason why I prefer artificial.

I am a traditionalist, I held out for a real tree for many years. Two or three years ago I was in Home Depot a week before Christmas and they had an artificial, pre-lit tree on sale for $50. That's cheaper than a real tree that needs to be thrown away after a couple of weeks. We are now a phony tree family.

Artificial...

Call me crazy but I like to breath, I am allergic to pine gum (the sap of a pine tree) and if I have a real tree I stop breathing..

So for me it must be an artificial tree... I even carry high doses of anti-histamines, rescue inhalers and an epinephrine dose with me all season just in case I go to someones house and they have a real tree...

Addition: If you want to have the scent of a real tree while using an artificial tree get a couple car fresheners (the oil ones work the best, or a plug in room freshener on pine scent.. Tuck the car fresheners behind the pole of the artificial tree (one high one low)...

People who smell the pine scent will automatically assume it's coming from the tree completing the illusion...

If I did put up a Yule tree, it would definitely be alive. I'm very, very tempted by the potted trees over at the local wholesale store over the hill. But alas, I have three cats, and my littlest would have a field day with the tree. She'd probably have it knocked over in about two seconds. That's if my oldest didn't kill it first when he realized there was somewhere besides the litterbox to pee.

But I would love to have a live tree in my home.

Blessed Yule!

there are pros and cons to both.... I prefer the real just because I love the piney smell and it reminds me of being with my family, the "evergreen" tree represents Christs ever lasting love for you so I would go real, the only thing is cleaning up the pine needles can be a real pain in the neck. I bought a fake one this year because I have a tiny little apartment and a real one would never fit.... if you like keeping it easy fake all the way, but I prefer real 100%

I always use a real tree. The artificial just doesn't feel right. It's just not natural. But at the same time, I don't cut the tree down. It's outside my house in the front yard, lolz

I have a artificial tree right now. They're reusable, which is nice, but it was made in China (bad labor laws) and probably has PVC or some other chemical nastiness in it. I'd like to try a real tree one day, and at the end I'd either recycle or burn it.

The only artificial trees I can abide are the silver ones. If you're going to have a fake Christmas tree, it should look like a fake Christmas tree, godammit.

Real. I love the smell of real trees and it just would not be Christmas without a real tree, even if it is a pain in the a** sometimes.

We've had a fake one (the kind that looks real) for the last several years and I will never go back to real trees. We just pop ours in the box when we're done. No mess, no fuss.
