There are 2 accounts of Creation in Genesis, but most Christians take it "literally" that the world and the universe was, indeed, created in 6 days and God rested on the 7th.
Fundamentalism is a term with differing meanings and definitions some of which are controversial to groups with certain vested interests. The original usage was used to describe a narrowly defined set of beliefs that developed into a movement within the US protestant community in the early part of the 20th century. These religious principles were in opposition to the modernist movement within the presbyterian church and espouse the strict adherence and faith in religious fundamentals.

Taking anything from the Old Testament literally is a mistake many Christians make. You can't really blame them because their "leaders" are just as clueless.
Most modern, especially American Christians teach heavily from both the Old Testament and the epistles of Paul - while discounting the direct teaching of Christ. This makes them Pauline Jews, not Christians.
Does 6 days literally need to be such as issue? How about 10, 30 or even 6 million years? We are talking about an omnipotent creator who created the universe with a word. Why get so hung up on the time it took to create?
We judge midnight to midnight as being one day. At the time genesis was written (2300+ BCE), a day was from sunset to sunset. According to Genesis, the sun wasn't even created until the beginning of the fourth day! 6 days is in no way literal.
Instead of making such a big deal about the suggested logistics of world creation, instead read the more important parts surrounding it:
1) God created man in God's own image and likeness. This is what distinguishes man from the rest of creation, and above all explains man's unique position in the cosmos.
2) God created Women because he didn't want man to be lonely. It could have happened women were created first and men created so women would not be lonely. It does not matter in which order it happened. The important thing is that by God's love, man and woman were created to "complete" one another.
3) In addition, God gives us free will - as first demonstrated by the "Tree of knowledge" Garden of Eden story. We may choose to go towards God achieving Grace or away from God, committing Sin.
The first time freewill was tested, they chose to separate themselves from God. Thus, humans inherited Death. (We were probably never meant to die) It is important to point out here that eternal life was once again restored by the incarnation action of God, the perfect example of man who is Jesus Christ. God loved his creation so much that he humbled himself to become one of us - experience our existence while teaching us directly.
Those are three things I think are far more important than considering how many days creation actually took.
Fundamentalists are best prayed for. They are lost to the constraints of foreign translations and self-interpretation. They follow the teaching of other men (Wesley, Luther, Campbell, Calvin, A Pope, etc) about Christ than the actual teaching of Christ.

That's right. There are different ideas about whether Genesis 1 is literal or poetic, but all Christians will believe it happened.
The term 'fundamentalist' is generally used to mean people who have a very conservative take on all things religious, and who express their beliefs in quite forceful and probably not helpful ways. However, some people assume that all those who believe the Bible to be infallibly true are like this, and they're not.

I believe Genesis 2 or 3 says words to the effect that "These are the histories of the generations of the earth in the DAY that the Lord God created it". "Histories"? "Generations"? How does one get a literal day out of that?

Anyone who claims to understand the Bible completely is lying. Some parts are literal some figural. It is like 40 books and not just one.
