As long as you enjoy, then it is good. I personally don't like repeating the same drills over & over and doing so much kata, but I see the reasons behind it. There are so many martial arts, you can find one that suits you perfect. It seem like you did, good luck Osu!!!

Mac, that was beautifully said.

Shotokan is an off-shoot of Shorin Ryu.

It is not an old style, just like Goju Ryu, which is my art.

The arts that these come from are a synthesis of what the Okinawans had already developed and practiced, and what they learned from the Chinese. These were more concepts, theories and principles than actually kata, although alot of the movements were adapted.

Shotokan is impressive to watch. It's great if you want to enter tournaments and do demonstrations.

I admire the 'spirit' which Shotokan karate emphasizes.

When I first began competing in the new 'mixed styles' karate competitions in the late 60s early 70s you could always tell the Shotokan stylist was fighting because of all the screaming.

I also learned to really respect and emulate the 'reverse punch' of Shotokan Karate. That reverse punch, the 'gyaku zuki, of Shotokan is extremely powerful and effective in a street fight, and once fully developed, by at least Nidan, you should have no problem defeating an assailant.

But while Shotokan is a very good style and instills the correct attitude, it lacks sophistication in handling various street fight conditions.

It's a good style, very old school hard style. Only thing I don't really like is there are so many kata.
