I have a couple of atheist friends and when they sneeze, I usually don't say anything. Nor do they say anything when I or someone else sneezes. Of course, my Christian friends and I always say "Bless You" to each other, but I don't see the point in asking an atheist to be blessed by something they don't even believe in.

You can say nothing at all, ignore it like they didn't sneeze. I'm agnostic and don't particularly like the phrase "God bless you" but for some reason I don't mind "Bless you", it just seems to be a bit more general.

I never thought about that. I just say bless you. If you think about it, blessing someone is just wishing good things for them, and if you just say bless you and don't say God's name, then they can decide who the blessing is really coming from or just be glad that someone wished good for them. Personally, I think people read way too much into a lot of this stuff. Why can't people just be glad that someone was being polite to them? It meant something to them even if it meant nothing to you!

Is there really any reason to acknowledge when someone else sneezes? If I sneeze, i say 'Excuse me' or 'Pardon me', but I don't see the need to say anything when someone else sneezes.

its an old wives tale that when you sneezed that was your sole trying to excape. and saying god bless you cramed it back in. also in reality, your heart stops everytime you sneeze, so think about it that way... but its just a fimiliarity, it really has nothing to do with god.
