Hi Rob...senior cats commonly suffer from either chronic renal failure (CRF), hyperthyroidism, diabetes or other ailments can dramatically lose a bit of weight. Sudden weight loss is very serious and can cause hepatic lipidosis (liver failure) and would require immediate medical attention.

Please consider ringing your veterinarian to discuss your cat's symptoms so they can schedule an appointment to have your cat come in and evaluated and treated respectively.

Not all worms/parasites are visible to the naked eye. Hookworms, for example, are microscopic. And giardia and coccidia are microorganisms. It would be worth doing a fecal sample to make sure. You probably don't need one for all 3 cats as they live in the same household and are all experiencing weight loss. I would also rule out any non-environmental factors because they are all losing weight. If they have gotten sick, they could spread that through the pride, and that could result in weight loss. Have they been vaccinated against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia, feline leukemia, or FIV? Are they experiencing any coughing, sneezing, runny eyes, fever, loss of appetite, diarrhea, activity level? edit: you usually can see tapeworms in stool. they break into segments that look like grains of rice. The other worms that you can see in stool are usually roundworms, they look like strings of spaghetti. However, your pet can get tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, giardia, coccidia, toxoplasmosis, etc. And most of those are not visible to the unaided eye. My cat was prescribed Drontal today because I noticed tapeworms in her stool and my vet tech said they wouldn't show up on the fecal test that I am having done.

My cat has progressively lost weight over the past few months. You can feel all her bones. She acts normal & doesn't appear in pain. SHE IS 22 YEARS OLD. I had a lady I know from Animal Rescue look at her. She said she felt an unknown lump in her belly but, she also said at age 22+ it's normal that she would develop chronic renal failure (CRF). She also said that at this point, with my financial plight that it wouldn't be wise to take hero a Vet & spend all the money for Blood Tests etc... She gave me a bag of prescription kibble & told me to soak it so it gets soft. She also said to feed her more canned food & gave me 6 cans to start with.
I live on SSDI & can't afford $100's of dollars for Vet Bills, just to tell me SHE'S 22 YEARS OLD & at the end of her life. I was told what behavior to expect if it is chronic renal failure (CRF) & when it gets to that point, My friend will assist me with peacefully putting to her rest. She was born under my bed so, we've had many good years together & I would never wish for her to suffer.

Your cat is the right age for,and has the symptoms of, diabetes. Take him to your vet and have a blood test run (fructosamine test), to check his glucose levels. IF he does have diabetes, it can be treated with insulin, and the vet will have to monitor it regularly, to get the dosage right. My 13 yr male cat was diagnosed w/diabetes in Aug of '06. He's been on insulin ever since, and is now gaining weight and feeling a lot better. Hope this helps......Good luck......

How old is your cat?
It could be a number of things, . Just to be safe, I would take him to the vet and make sure its not cancer or renal failure or anything like that. the sooner you take him to the vet, the better.
EDIT- Yes, if he is an older cat he defintely needs to see a vet. They need to run a blood panel on him. I sure hope hes ok!

My cat did the same thing and died.

He will gradually become slower and slower until it's too late for you to do anything about it.

Get him to the vet now for an evaluation.

He is probably sick...he really should see a vet..he shouldn't lose that much weight so fast.

When it happened to my kitty..he ended up having that Feline Aids which caused him to develop Leukemia. Its really scary but please get him checked out soon.
