My daughter (11 months) hasnt been able to eat or drink all day without throwing up immediately after. Would it be better to give her sips of water, Sprite or Ginger Ale? She is runnin a low fever (99.3). Thanks to answers.

When my son was 11 mos old he got a terrible stomach virus; throwing up AND diarrhea. I took him to the doctor and the doctor sent us home with this advice:
Give him a tablespoon of liquid (water, sprite, gingerale etc) if he throws it up, wait an hour and try again. Do this until he holds it down. Once he held it down for that hour, I went down to 30 min. then 15 etc. The doc said if you do not follow this advice he will have to go to the hospital and get iv's. If a child does not have diarrhea, and you are not giving them anything to throw up, they won't dehydrate unless they have a super high fever. It really is that simple.
There is nothing wrong with doctoring your child yourself or asking for advice about it. Unless she is projectile vomiting for hours on end with fever and diarrhea, keep her home with you. All the doctor will tell you is that it is a virus and there is nothing they can do unless she become dehydrated.
Do what this doctor told me to do and she'll will be fine.
GOOD LUCK!

I have been a mom for 28 years to 4 kids plus I have been a child care provider in my home for 20 years. I have dealt with a lot of vomiting. Ultimately, the goal is to keep her hydrated. What she drinks really won't matter much. Encourage any type of clear liquid, mostly because when it is thrown back up it won't stain everything it comes into contact with. So, avoid the cherry Kool Aide. Some kids like cola products to help settle stomach issues. Years ago Coke syrup was given for stomach ailments and my mom always drinks regular Coke when she has nausea and vomiting. My personal favorite is Vernors (ginger ale) when I have a stomach virus. Even a little weak tea may set on her stomach well. I suggest that you give her whatever she will drink. The fever is so low that I would hold off on the Tylenol. First, it really isn't needed unless she is in a lot of pain, second, she'll likely throw it back up anyway. If she won't eat, that is fine, kids can go several days without eating as long as they continue to drink something. Popsicles can help, too, as well as diluted juice (at least 1/2 water and 1/2 juice). Some people may suggest you use a pedialyte-type product. My doctor was never really big on them and said they weren't really necessary. Not to mention that the one time I tried to give it to my youngest daughter she hated it and wouldn't drink it. I wouldn't go out and buy anything special, just offer her several sippy cups or cups with straws with a variety of liquids and let her drink what she feels like drinking. Unless she becomes lethargic, spikes a fever, and refuses to drink anything I don't think a doctor is necessary at this point.

Your going to have to do something to keep her hydrated. Throwing up in general is not terrible...just a little inconvenient. It's the bodies way of ridding it of what ever is bothering it. It's when the vomiting gets to the point that a kid becomes dehydrated. Try some pedialite and the crackers. Some toast too might help settle her stomach. If she is vomiting too much...you might have to take her to the doctor. They can administer a suppository that will help stop the vomiting. I wouldn't give her Tylenol unless the temperature went higher than 100.

You should let her have crushed ice. Like the kind you get at Sonic. The small ice pieces will absorb mostly through the mucous membranes in her mouth, going right to the blood stream, without filling her little tummy. Try not to worry about giving her anything to eat, she will not starve. It will only upset her tummy more. A fever is not considered high in children until it reaches over 102.4. I would not give her any Tylenol. Fever is a natural body reaction to viruses. If you reduce the fever prematurely then the body will not have a chance to fight effectively. Just give her lots of love and attention.

It won't hurt to give her infants tylenol on an empty stomach. If it bothers her it will come up too. I wouldn't worry to much....giver her what she needs which is love, time, held, and some water. Don't try to push solids on her or anything that is harsh on the stomach. If she is on formula still dilute it down because when babies have fevers milk curdles in thier little tummies. It sounds like she is teething and at her age that is almost a definite. I used peppermint tea....it has the natural stomach soothing and it is a sleep aid to. Just make some up and put it in her bottle/sippy cup. Ohh the other thing that helps my little girl is a nice warm bath just makes them feel better.

Hey there:)
No worries she will be just fine give her a warm bath and try to get her to drink!! You dont want her to become dehydrated.. If it lasts too long then I would have her seen but for now give her some tylenol even on an empty stomach she will be fine ;)
Let her sleep and rest oh you could try gateraid or pedialyte they have electrolites in them that will keep her from becoming dehydrated
Good luck I hope she is feeling better I know it sucks when you have a wee sick one....

Dont give her anything to eat or drink for 1 hr. Yes I know you dont want her to get dyhrdrated but I promise one hour wont kill her. Her stomache is to upset right now to handle anything. After that hour giver her small sips of pedialyte or water. Since she's to young to know not to chug it (she's thirsty so she's doing what feels good) just put a VERY small amount in a cup or bottle. Wait 15 minutes to make sure she doesnt throw it up. Repeat agin going down in 5 minute increments untill she can drink sips every few minutes with out throwing up. an NO you dont need to take her to the doctor unless she appears dyhydrated. I know I'm in school almost done with it to be a nurse!!

Hi there. I am sorry youre little one is sick. Mine was a few weeks ago and for the same reason, I didnt take my son in. "It's viral, it has to run it's course" and in the meantime, you have exposed your child to 45325 million more germs. I am with you, sister. However, if she is getting dehydrated, you may want to take her in because that can be dangerous. I have also heard of Pedialyte helping with kids who wont take food/drink. Prayers have always helped my son when he is sick (and mom) who is doing everything. I hope your little one feels good. Also, just FYI, I never took my son to the dr - and he got worse - I finally went and he had a double ear infection - so if she gets worse, dont wait - because she may need medical help. Feel better soon.

Soda will just dehydrate her even more. Try plain water or Pedialyte. But if she doesn't start holding things down soon, you NEED to bring her to either the doctor or the ER. Young babies can become dehydrated very quickly, and yes it can be fatal. I'd give it another hour or so. If she can't hold it down, bundle her up and take her in. Please don't wait, because the results could be tragic. I hope she feels better soon.

Ginger ale is the most likely to minimize her nausea. Pour it back and forth between two glasses to get rid of a lot of the carbonation.
Dehydration is a big risk with little ones, so see if she'll drink some Pedialyte once she is vomiting less.
