Starvation mode really does NOT work, unless you carry it to the extreme. The reason being is that in the old days, people ate well during times of plenty; during winter and early spring, they had little to eat. To compensate, the human body revs up during times of plenty and slows metabolism down during times of hunger. Most like "starvation mode" will merely cause your metabolism to slow down; you might even GAIN weight.
It is best to consult with a doctor/nutritionist. Keep to a well-balanced diet; exercise to keep up the muscles. Perhaps eat a little bit less, exercise a little more.
The thing that most people forget is that PEOPLE REALLY ARE INDIVIDUALS; what works fine for one person might be disasterous for another.
Me, I cut out most of the junk food; keep intake of meat to a minimum; try to walk more. I lost 20 pounds...

Starving is a lousy way to lose weight, and they almost always gain it back and more.
I think what you are talking about is an Atkins type low carb diet (less bread and sugars, meat, veggies and fruit OK).
They help people lose weight pretty well, far better than "low fat" diets which it turns out don't do much at all.
Anytime you exercise you turn on your fat burning machine. Just exercise a half-hour a day, it doesn't really matter what kind, then eat sensibly - you'll lose weight I guarantee it.

DON'T DO IT!!! BAD BAD BAD!
If you really want to lose weight the right way then do it, don't go into starvation mode. There are a lot of free websites that will help you set up a healthy program. I personally use weight watchers and it really does work!! It just doesn't go as fast if you starv yourself.

Sorry- you heard wrong. When the body goes into "starvation mode" it stops burning calories. You won't lost any weight.
Your bodies metabolism slows down when it has been deprived of nutrients. It does this to ensure that if it continues to be deprived- it can survive longer.
As soon as someone who's been in "starvation mode" starts eating again they gain a lot of weight.

once you go into starvation mode you most certainly do not lose weight fast. when you stop eating or start skipping meals so that you can lose weight your body goes into starvation mode. your metabolism slows down and anything you do eat gets stored.
what you want to do to lose weight is to get your metabolism to speed up. so you need to eat more but less. 3 small nutritious meals and 3 small snacks in between. like apples or what not.
and as always, the more exercise the better.

I dont feel you should take things that way cuz I once was big and I did that and I ended up hospitalized and it isint fun lol. I did lose weight fast but its not good because you can have worse health complications and you can even die if its that bad. My aunt went through that and she was fed half of her life by a tube because she just couldnt eat anymore her stomach wouldnt let her. So there are alternatives such as getting rid of all unhealthy foods at home and try to run everyday or every other day or something.

Edit
Starvation mode is certainly real. I accidently put myself into starvation mode and let me tell you - it isn't fun.
It is really referred to as "low t3 syndrome" or "diet induced hypothyriodism" and can be proven with Free T3 and Reverse T3 tests. It shows that the body is now functioning in energy saving mode.
I literally didn't know what was wrong with me. I was doing everything "right". I was on a low carb diet and burning fat for energy - ketones in my urine proved that - and I was exercising on my eliptical trainer everyday and yet every damn day I weighed the same. It made NO LOGICAL sense. I even entertained the idea that maybe my scale was broken.
Flash forward to an emergency room visit (because of shortness of breath) and a visit to a cardiologist for a exercise stress test because my heart rate was only 53 resting ...
Just to find out I was hypothyroid (due to diet).
Anyway - I would definitely try to keep your calorie intake around 1500 per day. I lost over 100 pounds on a low carb diet much like atkins - and then I started to gain weight. Tried to lose it again and this is what happened to me. My body is so used to "starvation mode" that it just switches gears like it was a light switch.
So - even on a calorie deficite - you will lose weight but sooner or later you will hit that wall that can't be crossed unless you starve yourself even further.
I'm still overweight (way better than weighing 252) and I'm stuck because of low t3 syndrome. My doctor gave me t3 supplements but they give me hot flashes. I forgot to mention that in addition to having a low resting heart rate I was always very very cold and exhausted all the time. Most days I felt like I must be dying of some awful disease that my doctors haven't caught onto yet.
If you ever want to ask me anything specific you can always click on my avatar. I think I have it set so anyone can send me messages.

From what I have heard "starvation mode" means that your body starts feeding off of your fat storage. Which means no you don't loose weight fast....your weight loss will go into a plateau....evens itself out.

Never starve yourself to lose weight. You will end up sick, really sick....and NO you will not lose weight. Your weight will stay the same.
The proper most best way to lose weight is to exercise at least 4 or 5 times a week, change your eating habits (no junk food) & no eating in the middle of the night, eat fruits, vegetables & drink lots of water. Get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. Don't take any pills or diet supplements. They do not work plus it will make you sick. And last but not least.....stay positive.
