They pray facing towards the city of Mecca, which is the home city of their prophet, Muhammad. They all are also supposed to visits Mecca once in their lifetime, make a pilgrimage there.

Pretty muich everyone prays in some formation - the whole kneeling thing started it. Personally, I think it has to do with standing up for yourself - the lower the praying, the less respect for individual humans.
