public relations has more to do with articles that are published and includes internal communications with employees. you do press releases and stuff like that.

advertising is more about trying to get customers and control brand image.

the goal of advertising is to sell a product, increase sales/market share, attract new customers - usually there is an end result that can be measured.

public relations is more about selling an image, creating a relationship - how you want the public to perceive you.

advertising is also running print ads in newspapers, magazines, etc or on billboards, bus stops, whereas public relations includes things like event sponsorship or running awareness or outreach programs. anything that makes you feel warm and fuzzy is PR and anything that makes you want to open your wallet is advertising.
