My mother told me she can't come to his birthday party because she's too busy with Christmas shopping and decorating. She's always been extremely selfish and nasty but I don't know what to tell him about why she's not attending his party. I don't want to tell him that shopping is more important to her than being with him. What do I do?

It's definitely upsetting me. She said she'd come and now she's not. Other family will be there and he'll definitely wonder why she's not. I can leave it vague, but yes it's upsetting to me that she won't make the effort.

I'm sorry I guess I didn't make this clear: she said to him that she would come and now she's not. I know he'll ask me why. I don't want to tell him shopping is her priority. He will get upset at that. What do I say??

I bet it is very upsetting. Well, what I would do is if he ask where she is, simply say grandma couldn't make it. If he asks why say you don't know, but that you will save her a piece of cake and let him pick out the piece he wants her to have. That truly is a bummer, I can't believe she isn't coming to her own grandsons birthday party, I mean these years are special and priceless and she should at least want to be there. It's only two hours out of her day, that is so wrong. Good luck hun, and Happy Birthday to your son.

I agree, just say she's busy and let it go. If he wants a better answer, let her tell him why other things are more important to her. I think that it is bothering you more than anything, and that is some thing that you should address with her too.
Gifts and decorations are all material things, the time that she has should be spent on Family. Life is just too short.

That is pretty selfish that she can't take time out to go to a little kids birthday especially a 5 year old that will not understand why grandmother didn't come.
just tell him if he asks that she had something goin on same time as your party and couldn't get out of it.

I agree with iyam~

No need to make any kind of issue over it, I am sure it upsets you more than him. He is a 5year old little boy with not a care in the world...don't put this on him. If he asks just tell him as simply as you can that she couldn't make it but you can call her later to talk to her and tell her how much fun you had.

Don't make this your son's problem!! It sounds like she's not the kind of Grandmother that he could be close to. There will be plenty of people there and he probably won't be bothered. If he keeps asking, tell him you're not sure but he can ask her the next time he sees her.

Tell him his granny is a very special person. she plans her whole life ahead and unfortunately due to the fact you did not plan his bithday in advance she will not be able to attend his bithday party....but he will still get a present from her..(even if you buy one for him) (later tell her what a "bit.." she is)

No reason to make an issue. IF he asks.....Simply tell him
that grams isnt able to attend. If he asks why, tell him you dont know, and WE will ask her when she visits next.
