The long ages ended at the time of the flood. If you look at Genesis 5 then at Genesis 11 (verses 10 to the end of the chapter) you will see a slow drop off in the ages from preflood to post. The Bible is actually silent as to how that happened. There are some clues that the atmosphere was slightly different back then. That might have been the reason, but at best we only are left with pure speculation on the decrease in ages.

Before the great flood there was a canope of water surrounding the earth and the people were shielded from radiation coming from outer space. In addition the atmosphere at sea level was 2 atm instead of one, making breathing more efficient. In addition
sin had not taken hold on mankind as it did later.
There are any number of factors involved. The Christian Research Institute in Glenrose Tx, headed up by Dr Carl Baugh would be a good place to check out more facts.

The bible doesn't do a real good job of explaining why this happened. Some other Jewish texts claim that the constant iniquity of humanity kept shortening their life spans.

However, from reading a good number of texts from many different religions I've come to a suspicion that the real reason may be something called the "Elixir".

I suspect that there may have been a substance that could extend human life dramatically and that knowledge of how to create it was lost during a major cataclysmic event that destroyed almost all of human civilization at one time. The bible refers to this cataclysm as the flood of Noah, but there are many other references to a flood like this in other ancient myths and religions.

Although the knowledge of how the elixir was made was lost, legends of it have continued. The alchemists have been trying to recreate it throughout most of history.

However, this is just an idea I find intriguing. I don't consider it to be some major religious "truth" or anything of that nature.

First, there has never been any real evidence, scientific or otherwise, that the people of the old testament lived to be 900 years old. If anything, given the living conditions they dealt with, the average lifespan during those times was probably more in the 35 to 45 years.
Secondly, the bible is not a history book. It is a collection of parables much the same as the ancient writings of Greek and Roman mythology.
Finally, it seems the only problem you are incurring and one that you seem to fail to realize, is that you can not take the writings of the bible literally.

No one knows for sure.
Some think== that there was a water canopy over the earth and that it was kinda like a green house-tropical all around the earth. The o2 level was about twice as high and harmful rays from the sun and any other sources were blocked by the canopy. The introduction of sin-which permeated 'everything', began the corruption of man's genetic structure. When the flood came, the canopy was destroyed and the o2 level dropped. This is all speculation. But, it is possible.

Sorry , I'm not Christian , but I'll explain it just the same.
In the warmer parts of the world it's difficult to determine when it's summer or winter , therefore what we call years were not years to them .
The passage of time was recorded by moon years . The moon was reliable , every twenty-eight days. Big , full , round , visible .
Those who lived nine hundred moon-years were in their seventies . Very old for those days . Not any more . I'm way past that .

God's mandate to the first humans was to multiply and increase in number and fill the earth. God then gave them longer years in order to fulfill this, that they may marry more than their own generation.
Right now, the world is overpopulated. It is no longer necessary to be productive and therefore longer life is not necessary.

I can't believe no one else has corrected you yet...A.D. means "Anno Domini" or "after the death of Jesus"...that's New Testament, not Old Testament...get it right...
