Be as friendly and cheerful as possible. Singing, dancing, smiling and laughing all help. If you are going to be ringing the bell with a partner, try not to get too deeply involved in serious topics. Keep it light. And if someone doesn't give, wish them Happy Holidays anyway.
I'll be ringing the bell in my area the next three Fridays and Saturdays.

That is a hard question because there are so many people out there, I know as a holiday shopper , every store I seem to go in there is someone that is ringing a bell and if I put money into all of them i may as just donate all the money and stay at home. But if I were in your shoes I would make eye contact with each person and smile and wish them a Merry Christmas and not let any emotion of mine show if they donated or not because they may have just given at the last store they had been at. One thing that I do not like is when a person kind of follows me with the bell ringing, and kind of showing on their face if they approve or not because I didn't drop any thing in the bucket. Now a days the stores take every bit you have , even your change so when you come out there is nothing left, your best shot is to give the biggest smile and make eye contact with them on their way in while they still have some money in their pocket.

Be friendly, smile, ask people how they're doing, and wish them a Merry Christmas. The Salvation Army makes so many family's Christmas special so I donate without the bell ringer doing anything. I actually rang bells myself when I was in high school.

I'm hoping you have a spot where parents take thier kids, because they will always be your best clients. Warm up to the kids and you'll get money from the parents. I live in a small town and everybody knows the guy that sings the christmas carols. So I of course suggest singing if you have a decent voice, too.

I like passive bell ringers that don't give the 'look'. Sometimes I really don't have money on me. Also people may give to other charities such as United Way. Just be friendly and non-aggressive and wish everyone a holiday greeting whether they give or not.

Singing and dancing and smiling and winking and acting silly or if you are standing in front of a store with carts returning the cart... All those things have worked in the passed with me.

I'd donate but I always carry my bank card and never have cash on me anymore. Sorry.
