While you're home, put him in the crate for 10-20 min. Do this every couple hours. Eventually increase the time he stays in the cage. Crate training is very good for dogs. My dogs walk to their crates when they see us getting ready to leave without us even telling them to go there. It becomes habit. Don't feel bad for the dog. Don't take him out because he's crying. He will then know that every time he whines or cries, you will come to the rescue.

I don't agree with cages, never had, never will. Why buy a dog then put it in a cage, you should have bought a budgie if you wanted to do that. Too many people buy dogs and then get annoyed with their behaviour because they haven't thought it through. I have four dogs and they have never been near a cage. I'm home all day with them, but obviously do leave them alone sometimes. You shouldn't have got a dog if you go out to work or spend lots of time away from home, a cat would have been better, they don't need your company, a dog does

This is very good, if htere should be a fire or anythign like that it is easier to save the dog.
The best thing is to put him in witha treat or two ( I would say kennel lead him in with a treat and tell him good dog.
Leave himin only for about 10 minutes and let out as he gets use to it increase the time. Continue ot do htis until you are satisfied.
You will probably have ot put up with some whining and barking.Just tell him no.
when he stops let him out.
I hope this works
Good luck

Leave the door open and throw a treat in for him for a few days. Then throw a treat in and leave him in there, closing the door for just for a minute, while you are there. Gradually increase the time and don't let him out while he is jumping around, try to make sure he's calm when you let him out. You could also try feeding him in there - leaving the door open at first. He will get used to it, but it will take time.

Here is a good website article that might help: http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pets_for_life_program/dog_behavior_tip_sheets/crate_training.html
It may be a little painful at first but well worth it in the long run for his safety and your peace of mind. Good Luck!

Associate the crate with good things. IE: Give him treats while he is in the crate or put his favorite toy in there. Eventually, his crate will be his home. Our dog goes up to her crate to nap all the time.

Hi,
Crates are not bad for dogs, in fact it usually makes them feel safe once they get used to it. I have a page on my website all about crate training your dog. Check it out, it might help.

one call it a kennel or crate and make sure it is enclosed meaning: if it is a wire one cover it with a blanket. dogs like security and this will make it like a cave and his home. to get use to it but him in there and leave it is the only way. don't make it to big or he will pee on one side of it. if it is a size where he can only pee where he lays down then he won't pee
good luck
