... Bruton Smith had a Brother-in-law named Curtis Turner http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruton_Smith and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_Turner . From the desription they called him "Pops" because he like popping other drivers on the track.

... Was Curtis Turner any kin to the owners of the Turner Broadcasting?

... Also was this an earlier version of Dale Earnhardt Sr and was Dale Sr influenced by Curtis Turner's driving style?

Curtis Turner is not related to Ted Turner. Curtis was a True Racer after the win at any cost!!! He had the right Body ingredients. + limits in Guts,+ limits in the Kahonies, and just a little - limits in the Brain Department--Not Dumb But just not Smart enough to realize what he could do to himself Physically by what Things he would try on the track. Example Driving a 56 Ford Crown Vic in the old Convertible series and getting both right side wheels up on the Top of the Gaurd rails and Holding it down wide open on the GAS!!! He had the Reputation that the other Old time Greats Like Lee Petty- The Flocks and Bob Welborne and others said we just try to stay ahead of or out of that Silly SOBs way. I dont know if Dale Sr. copied his style but he had a similar Reputation!!!!!

Well the fact his last name is Turner does not mean he is kin tothat Turner.
But the driving style of Curtis Turner was an influence to several drivers.Dale Earnhardt was one,and the reason I am a fan of Tony Stewart is he has some of the same traits that Turner had.

Never mind the butt wipe above me. Hopefully his answer will be pulled after we get done here.
Anyway- here's what I know to the best of ability:
Pops is (thank God) no relation to Ted (U.N.) Turner. At least I've found no evidence of it, and I studied up a couple of weeks ago about "old school" drivers. That's what I love about having the old schoolers like Papa Bill, Ray Y., Ed P., etc. 'cuz "they seen it."
From what I know, Earnhardt's intimidating style may have come a little from Turner, but more so from a guy who raced at a regional, not national level. His name? Ralph Earnhardt- Dale's dad. If he was behind ya, he'd cling to you like a dirty diaper to scare you out of the way. Sound familiar?

I remember Curtis Turner.. Not related to Ted Turner. (lets hope) Curtis was a bad *** driver, I remember seeing him slam someone into the wall at Darlington one time.. I was young, I remember my dad talking about him alot.. From what my dad said Dale Sr was lame compared to Curtis.. Dale Sr got some of his driving style from his dad Ralph he just drove at local tracks in southeast..
