My African Grey will only eat a few teaspoons of the mixture I give him. At this point he prefers for me to mush fruit and hand feed him that. After he is done eating all he wants to do is lay on me and go to sleep. He makes very strange noises and whistles when hes happy. I just want to make sure I am treating him right

You are doing more for your baby than you realize. Mine is 17 months old and still loves to be hand fed. Sure it may be a pain for some people but for me, knowing I have a life time to share with her I will gladly savor every one of these moments and you should too. Your baby loves you.

You could be creating a life long problem for yourself and the animal.
Greys are very habituated. Are you ready to hand feed him for the next 50 years?
Stop now before it becomes a situation where he substitutes plucking or self mutilation for the hand feeding.
Use this as a "special treat" not an everyday situation.
What you have created is a second weening for the bird. This can be VERY traumatic.
It's all very nice to be close to the bird, too close can cause violent and destructive behavior. They become very attached and jealous. Any action from a stranger or family member can be cause for attack.
My friend had a grey that bite/scratched his mother because she was giving him a hug. Required plastic surgery on her nose and ear. Very nasty and totally without warning.

How old? It is affection and gentleness which is good for a large bird to have I would say however he needs to be weened off of the mushed food. Start giving him the normal food he will have to eat it if he gets hungry really the can live over 100yrs so it is best to get it eating on his own sooner then later.

sounds very much like you are spoiling him but he and you both sound happy with the arrangement so why not just put in "extras" every now and then to see if he will find another favorite, fruits, nuts and some different bird seed mixes. I would hang some fruits next to his favorite perch just before you leave for the day to see if he will eat them while you are gone. Just don't try to pressure him now that he is your spoiled baby and he may try something new.

hint: lay paper on the floor before you leave in case he really does not like something he may throw it out of the cage! lol

Hiya you sound like you have a fab african grey, all that has happened is he has took to you like a companion like he would have done with another bird, the good thing is with a bond like this you have the advantage of he trusts you which is great for keeping him stimulated as these birds can become feather pluckers if they are bored, teach him tricks, by him toys that he has to work at like puzzles for treats, or with mine i started with the wooden jigsaws that you get for small children and toys with shapes to fit through holes keeps them entertained for hours and they love the stimulation

awww he sounds really cute and it sounds like you're both happy. I agree with the first responder that you're probably going to want to expand his food horizons and try to wean him off of hand feeding, you can't go on the rest of your lives like that considering African Grey's live for a long long time. Good luck!

You are being a wonderful "Parront" for your lucky Grey!
Soft foods are "comfort foods" for Parrots. Such things as warm( NOT hot ) Pasta, noodles, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, or even vegetable soup remind the Parrot of those delicious warm meals that used to be regurgitated to him by his Mommy!! MMMmmm Yummy!!! This type of comfort food has been known to calm a frightened or angry bird all by itself!!
The fact that you are willing to do this for your bird will ensure that you have a loving companion for life!!

Congratulations!!
