Could a person hit an 8" target fairly consistently a 100 yards? What about 200 yards? Do you have to be a really skilled shooter to achieve this, or simply a moderately skilled shooter? Is there a difference in accuracy with the Russian made ones that most of the world uses and the ones made in the USA and other countries, or are they all the same?

I've shot an M16A1 & M16A2 but I've never shot an AK before and I'm wondering how it compares accuracy wise.

It's not just how well the AK shoots, it starts with the capability of the 7.62x39 cartridge.

Good at 100 yards, only mediocre at 200 and beyond. Moderate shooting skill level. An SKS will outshoot an AK almost any time, as it has a heavier bolt, tighter chamber and longer barrel and sight picture.

You would be surprised....most of the world shoots AKs made in countries other than Russia. The Soviets farmed out a lot of this manufacturing to other Communists countries, as their plants modernized the Soviet military in the 1970s to making AK-74s, which shoot a much better caliber.

You can make a run of the mill AK much more accurate with a new barrel, better trigger group, etc. I have one that has been modified to be a much better rifle, but the guy must have spent $500 or more on the custom work.

Still, it's no M16/AR.

The AK varies greatly.

I had a WASR-10 redone by Century Arms to use high capacity magazines and it made groups the size of dinner plates at 100 yards. I replaced the sheet steel reciever, replaced the Century Arms trigger with a Tapco trigger, and reriveted the the gas piston a bit looser and it improved to around 5" groups from a bench at 100 yards.

I have 2 homebuilt Romanian AIM rifles using "G" kits that can do a 4-5" group at 100 yards on a bench.

Lastly I have my homebuilt AMD-65. I haven't done much with it other than test firing and shooting a couple off hand groups at 50 yards. Free hand at 50 yards with brass cased 1988 South African surplus 7.62x39, I managed a few 3 inch groups. I'm hoping it will stay around 3-4 inches when shot on a bench at 100 yards.

The Russian AK's have a milled receiver, the Chinese, Albanian, Romanian and Yugo all have stamped receivers that are not as good..... a skilled shooter should be able to hit an 8" target at 100 yards no problem.... 200 yards is the max for a decent shot group..... the Russians designed the AK for close quarter fighting, for 200 meters of less fighting.... trench clearing fighting too..... the Russian AK's are the best quality built.... but like I said they were built for close fighting, not sniping 300 meters out like the M-16......

You have to consider that the Ak's are combat rifles. Some people can hit an 8" plate consistently at 100 yard, but at 200 yds, it become iffy.

Due to the looseness of the bolt, receiver housing. The a/k is only good to around 100 - 130 yards consistently. The very attributes that make it indestructible and able to be fired while very dirty and poorly cared for are the same ones that limit it's accuracy.

I have found the Romanian AK's to be extremely accurate right out of the box. Out to 300 yards the 762x39 is very accurate and good for hunting deer and antelope and just having fun. They are rugged and reliable and trouble free. The m-16 isn't really much of a hunting rifle due to the light 22 caliber. I

Forget about the AK, and get yourself a 30-06 or 308 caliber in a bolt action Rifle, preferably a Remington or Savage Brand if you want dependable accuracy.*

The AK is almost as accurate as an M16, just fractionally worse. This entire legend of AK inaccuracy is based on full auto fire. The increased recoil makes keeping it on target more difficult than with an M16... on semi auto though they are not that different but on full auto the M16 stays on target better.

A skilled shooter could make the hits you are asking about with a good condition AK. AK's can last so long though, you could realistically shoot an AK 40 years old so it would not be as accurate since it is more worn.

You obviously need some shooting talent but from 100 yards a skilled shooter should be fairly consistent. From 200 yards like with any weapon it would vary slightly but still be considerably accurate.
