I'm an atheist, but plan on becoming a Christian right before I die, so I can go to heaven.

You just don't go to heaven because you say you're a christian, to enter into heaven is a process and you have to make a decision and a choice to choose your faith. The first process is when you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe with your heart that God raised him from the dead, you wil be save, Read Romans 10:7-13(KJV) and you will find your answer there. Another good example, there is a story in the bible where it is recorded concerning about the ten virgins, five were wise and five were foolish, the five foolish virgins took their lamps but took no oil, when they were told to go and buy oil, they went and came back, but it was too late to enter in, and the lord said he did not know them. Read Matthew 25:1-13(KJV). So, not because they are virgins, that make them holy to enter, but because they were not wise to be ready. So not because you say you're a christian, you will enter into heaven, but must be ready and prepared by being born-again, by accepting Jesus Christ as you Lord and personal savior and changing the way you live and how you live, and live a life that is pleasing to God, and doing what he has called you to do, till that day.

you have to want and mean it to be forgiven and then able to accept the forgiveness; you have to believe in Jesus, live a good life; and have no sins meaning that you have to ask for forgiveness; God judges and will use the same indicator as the individual did when they were alive; if you judge others and set a high standard of judgment to others; you are sealing your own fate. If you don't offer forgiveness to others, you may not be forgiven for the sins that you didn't get to repent before death; That will be the marker used to judge you; you don't get a free ride ; God knows what is in your heart and can weed out the liars; Heaven is a place with God wherever that may be ; he will let us know when it is time; you are not saved and then continue to sin ; your judgment comes from your entire life

Religion can not save you;
You never will be good enough to enter heaven;
and yet God does not wish for anyone to go to hell.
If a person attends a church and even says, "I'm a Christian," that does not mean anything.
If however, someone comes to the senses and realizes that in no way shape or form can they get their life straight without the help of God, and they ask Jesus to come into their life, regardless of their past, they will be saved.
When we come to God, we come to Him with a LOT of excess baggage, and He doesn't eliminate every single piece all at the same time. It is a gradual process that may take longer with stubborn people.
The most significant thing about God's love is His willingness to forgive. But, He only forgives those who sincerely ask for it.

No. You have to be chosen to be a judge with Jesus. Luke 22:28-30, 1 Corinthians 6:1-6. (Revelation 5:9, 10, 14:3)

Man, you asked a really tough question. My answer might be difficult to understand, but here goes....
Jesus died as payment to satan for all of our sins.
Jesus was the son of God who lived a perfect life, which makes payment equal in full.
So, with that said, all we need to do is accept Jesus' payment to go to heaven. However, if someone truly wants to accept what Jesus has done for them, I believe that they would love Jesus in their life. Also, I think we would also follow his teachings and guidance if he paid for our sins. So if one claims to accept Jesus' gift of salvation, but doesn't make any effort to live by what he says, it seems a little hypocritical to me. But I am not one to judge others on their actions, because I am very far from perfect. So I decide to just leave that between the person and Jesus.
So after all that, my main point is this. If someone truly and honestly understood what Jesus did for them, I don't think that person would just live a life of complete sin and throw it in Jesus' face. They would make a concious effort, not perfectly, or even not well, but I think we would see at least a shred of effort to follow Jesus out of that person.

The covenant of the New Testament freely offers forgiveness of sin and salvation of the eternal soul thru Jesus, Son of the one true God. All a person has to do is enter into (accept) this covenant with a sincere and repentant heart. This is assurance of the Kingdom of Heaven.
It really IS that simple.

Just saying your a christian isn't enough. One must be saved. To be saved you must first realize your lost and headed for a devils hell. The God draws us to him and then you can be saved. Just because a person is saved does not mean we are perfect. We still have the same rotten flesh like lost people have, and the same fleshly desires as lost people have. We pray through those temptations, and do our best to flee sin, and yet sometimes we give in to them. Christ was the only person who was ever perfect who was upon this earth.

You have been incorrectly informed. Instead of trusting the words of others, take the time to study the Bible for yourself. Otherwise, you will remain in the dark.
BTW: There is absolutely no scripture to support the idea of anyone going to heaven. Jesus will establish God's kingdom here on Earth--just so you know.

The point is that you have to accept Jesus Christ as your savior so that you will be forgiven for your sins.
